I have to ask, what is motivating all the love for Klimchuk? He has done well in the WHL, but hasn't been elite. Did not really make an impact on The Heat. Hasn't played in the World Juniors. Hasn't participated in a training camp yet.
Not suggesting he is not a great prospect, but what exactly is fueling the optimism?
Meanwhile Gilles, Ortio (and to a lesser extent Reinhart and Wotherspoon) have all been elite at multiple levels. I think that forwards tend to get a bit more hype personally and I would have him ranked below Gilles, ortio and wotherspoon.

Reinhart's been getting votes since about #2. Are a bunch of his extended family on CP or something? Explain yourselves.

I haven't voted for Reinhart yet, but I get the rationale. More or less ppg in the AHL at the age of 22, good size, great hockey iq and plays in all situations. What's not to like?

reinhart year 1 as a pro (AHL): 21 points in 67 games (7g, 14a)
reinhart year 2 as a pro (NHL): 63 points in 66 games (21g, 42a)
I think sums up why people are so high on him.

Reinhart out produced Granlund in the AHL this season and has a far more rounded game. He's still young at 22 and doesn't look out of place at all when he gets into NHL action. Whats not to like?
I was hoping he would start with the big club this season but the Byron signing pretty much nixed that (as well as Granlunds chance too).

Oh we're aware.
Klimchuk is the obvious choice to some of us because he has top two line potential. Whether he's played pro or not is irrelevant to his upside.
Wotherspoon may only be a #4-#5 guy which some guys will rank behind a potential top two line forward.
I think Klimchuk is pretty close to Baertschi/Poirier.

Yeah, except Granlund is a ROOKIE. That year of experience makes a huge difference if you're gonna compare the two. And Granlund has looked better at the NHL level, but it's arguable that his ceiling a higher than Reinhart's.
Reinhart is well rounded for what he is, which will be a bottom 6 player, but I'm not sure he'll even be able to translate as a center. If he slides to RW that would be good. I'd like to see him make the club full time, but he won't be a high impact player by any means. That kind of skill isn't in his game.
Reinhart is probably an 8-10th ranked prospect in the pool. He's closer to an NHL job than Knight and Arnold, so he goes ahead of them, but he's in that same tier.

It would be hard to research but there are not a lot of NCAA forwards who put up 25 pts in 39 games as a sophomore that go on to play in the AHL.
|
Hahaha.
Hanowski's 20 points in 37 games is near ppg?
Jooris had 28 points in 38 games as a sophomore, at 21 years old. Three years older than Jankowski as a sophomore.
Glencross was also 20 years old as a sophomore, not 19 like Jankowski.
Stick to the Ricardo grit meter.

For most of the last 25 years the hockey gods have shat all over us. They even stole our cup in 2004 in one of their cruelest jokes so far.
One of the only things they have given us is the continuing line that goes from Nilsson to Nieuwendyk to Iggy to Klimchuk. Blind faith in the unknown has been a human trait since the dawn of time, so why stop now!

I went Klimchuk this round, and then I think I'll go with my Wotherspoon as my first Dman choice. After that probably Reinhart.
Let's keep those goalies out of the top 10! Remember your history Flames fans! You can't trust a goalie prospect to not break your heart!

You didn't comment on the RGI when I was exploding young minds.
Any opinion now that Burke and the Flames Management are following it extensively? well outside of the signing of Raymond.
You called me correctly on half the NCCA players but Jankowski has to have a huge jump this year or he becomes a UFA August 15, 2016.

He was 7th before he out performed Wootherspoon by quite a wide margin at training camp.
He was ahead of Poirier and Klimchuck. Did these guys so far exceed expectations that they blew past Sieloff as prospects?? If Sieloff would have skipped Flames camp last year he would have definitely been on the USA WJC team... Niether Poirer or Klimchuck was.
I can see Wootherspoon staying where he was because he improved over the season to the point where he may have caught Sieloff.
Does anyone think that Poirier and/or Klimchuck with be on the Calgary Flames roster (or even the first call up) when camp breaks....
That will be the case with either Sieloff or maybe Wootherspoon.
The Jets drafted Selanne #10 overall in 1988 after he put up 2 points 5 games when he shattered his leg. It was set poorly and over a year later he came to Winnipeg where he had the leg rebroken and re-set. He turned out OK.
In 1990 the Jets drafted TKachuck #19 over-all after he missed all but 6 games of his High School year (he got 26 pts in those 6 games). He recovered from his injury okay.
I think that too much emphasis is being given to Sieloff's injury and infection. It is not like it was his 5th concussion or something.
|
Simply put, not everything can be summed up in numbers.
Not having a strong chance of being on the Flames roster this season does not make a good player like, Gillies, Klimchuk or Smith less of an organizational asset. It just means the team is giving players time to grow into their potential.
Seiloff did not have a great year, while injury problems my not have been his fault it was a set back. While players like Wootherspoon, Granlund, and Poirier had great years.
And though we should not read to much into Klimchuk vary strong rookie camp helped his stock.
Also there is no was you can compare a Canadian not making an international team to any other nationality. While we do not always win the best on best turnis, our depth is unquestionably miles ahead of the next best countries.

Well Klimchuk should dominate the WHL this year much like Baertschi did in his 19 year old year. Klimchuk should go and do well at the World Juniors. Those are the expectations.
I think fans sometimes are a little wary about goalies so I can see many of us downranking them slightly because they are wildcards.

Good point... but these are the same guys with Bennett replacing Monahan.
Sieloff is not a shiny new thing this year??
He was the 2nd biggest positive surprise of the prospects last October to Monahan being NHL ready.
If we would have held this poll at the start of the season he would have been ranked #3 behind Monahan and Baertschi or maybe 4 if folks could be happy with Bouma being the best 3/4 liner he could be.
I don't trust having a better year as a 19 year old in juniors as a big reason for optimism
Nemisz had a better junior year the year after the Flames drafted him.
Irving had a better junior year the year after the Flames drafted him
Pelech had a better junior year the year after the Flames drafted him
Boyd blew the doors off back in juniors after the Flames drafted him
None of them looked great at an NHL training camp as Sieloff has.
Backlund and Baertschi were close to the best junior aged players not in the NHL the year after the Flames drafted them.
Backlund was 10 soft games away from becoming a Hurricane last fall and Baertschi is further away than he was this time last year.
