Default Summer Prospect Ranking Poll Round 27

Lots of disagreement on the Flames prospect ranking so why not poll them out through August and come up with a list that we can refer back to each summer.

Pick the top one left on the list each round.

Some pick on a mix of potential and ceiling, others just on talent ... use your own methodology.

Voted for Ortio this time around. Though in his limited time in the AHL left much to be desired, his amateur and professional numbers have been good, and he really has shined in important stretches (like the WJC). Still think he has what it takes to develop into a starter, though he really has to come through starting this year.

I think Roy is the only guy left with better than bottom line potential. Gotta go with that higher ceiling!

Ortio has got lost in the discussion over the past couple of seasons. But he is in his early 20s excelling in a pro league in a country known for producing great goalies.

This should be a very interesting year for Calgary goaltenders with Ramo, Berra, Ortio, and Brossoit all relatively unknown in terms of NA pro capability.

Went with Nemo, it's too bad his skating will probably never be good enough for the NHL, but if things finally start going right for him he still could find a niche in the league somewhere. Don't see him being with the Flames for the long-term, but he's still an asset that could have some value if he has a strong AHL season this year.

I jumped on the Nemisz bandwagon. Moon's comments struck a cord with me and I agree that at this point Nemisz has one task to perform and that is to work his tail off and get called up to the NHL this season (and then make it stick).

None of the other guys on the list are as close to the NHL as Nemo this season.

Harrison is more intriguing to me than Nemisz so I voted for him and jumped on the Bingo bandwagon

First round pick to barely cracking the top 30 prospects as voted by the loyal fanbase. I hope Nemisz proves us all wrong at some point and finds a way to jumpstart his development again.

I've pretty much written off Nemisz at this point, he and Howse are right near the bottom of this list for me. I hope he proves me wrong as well.

Voted for Harrison this round.

Same here. I think Nemisz is going to end up following the path of Irving. I've been wrong before though!

I agree. Prospect regression is a bad sign.

I don't agree with the comments that Nemisz job is to make the NHL. He didn't even get a call up last season while players like Bancks did.

His job is to prove he can take steps forward in the AHL. Either as a physical defensive bottom 9 player or as an offensive top 9 player.

He isn't so old that he should be written off if he is taking steps forward. But he took a BIG step back last season and he failed to take a step forward the season before that.

I have him at the bottom of the list. The only reason he is even on the list is because he is young enough to turn it around. But I think that is unlikely.

I'm thinking this year is his last chance. Flames signed him to a 1-yr deal this summer.

Hope he does something with his last opportunity, though I don't expect it.

Voted Ortio.

Like someone else said Nemisz and Howse are at the bottom of the list for me. It's great that Nemisz has gotten a couple of NHL games in. I think he might get a couple of more this year, but after that i don't see him getting anymore.

Where would Brendan Smith 23 year old D-man with Detroit rank as a Flames prospect?

Smith does not play gritty at the NHL level being identified of one of the 20 softest D-men in the NHL by the RGI index.

Billins (in his first year as a pro) stats are not quite as good as Smith's... playing the same system with the same teammates.

Billins was on a contract to Grand Rapids and so could not have been called up to play with the wings last season. And half of Billins first season was played in the super AHL where the best young NHL players were playing during the strike. ie Smith probably took away ice time and some scoring points from Billins in the first 32 games of the season

Greg Nemisz and even the unlisted Paul Byron & Ben Street could very well be among the first call-ups this season due to all their pro experience..

Quote:
Any consideration for last seasons call-ups Paul Byron & Ben Street.. they've pretty much played about the same number of pro games as Chris Breen & Greg Nemisz with Byron also being the same age as Billions & Breen and Street being the same age as Berra.

Other prospect call-ups from last season include; Baertschi, Horak, Reinhart, Hanowski & Cundari with Bouma, Nemisz & Byron (Sabres) being re-called the previous two seasons.

Nemisz was on the call up list the two years before this one (and personally, I thought he did well when called up). Some people would say that he regressed and that is why he didn't get a call up in 2013 but others say it is because he was battling injuries and it messed up his season. Obviously, I believe the injury story.

This summer Nemisz was given a 1 year contract and to me that says that the Flames also think that he should not be writen off just yet. If he shows up healthy and ready to go at the start of the season, manages to avoid re-injury, then the only thing left to do is earn a third call up and make it stick.

Anything less than that and he is probably looking at leaving the Flames or signing an AHL contract like Bancks.

Not much to choose from...

I went with Rafikov because I feel like he would have gone higher in the draft if he wasn't Russian. Solid stay at home defender with good size and intellect. Who knows if he will ever come over here to play, but he has the toolset to develop an NHL game.

Billins is flying under the radar around here. He was an AHL All-Star on the Calder Cup champion.
