Default Summer Prospecct Ranking Poll Round 24

Lots of disagreement on the Flames prospect ranking so why not poll them out through August and come up with a list that we can refer back to each summer.

Pick the top one left on the list each round.

Some pick on a mix of potential and ceiling, others just on talent ... use your own methodology.

I say we go all the way to 30. I'm really interested to see where a guy like Nemisz or Ferland falls.

It's between Ferland, Hanowski, and Kulak. Everyone else is an extreme long shot.

I went Ferland because he has the potential to be a decent power winger that can score. Not sure about the upside of anyone else.

You figure that Billins doesn't play at least a few NHL games this year?

He will be the #1 guy in Abbottsford and was the top (offensive) d-man on the Calder Cup winner.

He has similar (much better playoff) AHL creds as Derek Smith ( 76 games 56 pts 2010-11 in Binghamton as a 26 year old) who never played a game for the Heat.

Billins 24 years old 100 ahl games last year with Grand Rapids 51 pts.

Is the Flames defense going into 2013-14 that much better than it was going into 2011-12?

since then Flames added Russell , SOB, Wideman ... lost Sarich, Bouwmeester, Babchuck and Hannan.

I'm sticking Harrison but I've been having voter remorse with guys like Hanowski, Ferland and Kulak still on the list.

Funny how you feel like you're slighting someone when you vote

Been voting Ferland for a while now. He's got big upside if he can realize it.

I think Roy has real upside - he just needs good coaching on D and a lot of time to develop - could be a good late bloomer. At this stage, they are all boom/bust picks

I have no idea what any of this has to with what I posted.

Billins is likely a career AHLer with the upside of being a tweener or extra defender.

Ferland and others still have the potential to be NHL regulars. I stand by what I said about the rest of the prospect group.

I understand that 24 is really old for a player on CP right now but it is a bit early to say that there is no further room for growth for Billins. He has had a good showing for his first pro year and if given a cup of coffee on the Flames he may yet impress everyone. I am pretty pleased with where he is at considering this is his second pro season.

Ferland's first pro year resulted in him going back to the WHL as an overage player. IMO he is going to need to improve this year to avoid getting buried in Alaska.

that's the way i've been voting also.

I'd love to see this guy become a Lucic-lite down the road. that's a massive IF of course, but a quick compare:
Lucic: 6'4, 220lbs
Ferland: 6'1, 225 lbs

WHL Careers (regular season):
Lucic: in 133 games, he scored 87 point, and 298 PIMs => 0.65 points/game, and 2.24 PIM/game

Ferland (ignoring this past season): in 185 games, he scored 180 points, and 279 PIMs => 0.97 points/game, 1.51 PIM/game

naturally, the above is pretty meaningless, given their just stats and i haven't really watched either during their junior careers. I think the main thing about lucic, is not only is a bruiser wiht hands, which ferland appears to also be, he can really skate. I think that's likely one of the bigger deterrents for big bruising guys like these in making it at the pro level.

Hopefully Ferland can keep up and adjust to the pro's this year, but i'm still optimistic that there's a lucic-lite in there somewhere!

Guy who is not getting enough love is Matt Delbouw.

0.5 PPG in his first season of college hockey, 2nd on his team in scoring while being a defensive/faceoff specialist.

Guy has Corban Knight type upside.

He's not likely a top 20 guy, but like Harrison could be a good college Wild Card.

That is also what I like about Ferland.

What would be awesome is if Ferland and Harrison both work out. That would be a pretty wild second/third line to have a couple guys that are fast, big and looking to hit everything that moves AND also have the ability to score. Combine that with Knight playing center and the twin towers, Kanzig and Breen, on the backend and that could be a physically dominating shift of hockey.

Not much love for Chad Billins, eh?

It's not like he was an AHL all-star and led his team to the Calder Cup in his first pro season. He maybe doesn't have potential to be a top 2 NHL d-man, but he's a top 2 AHL d-man that might surprise people if he gets a shot due to injuries on the back end.

Not much love for 5'10" 175 lbs. defencemen. He'll need to be exceptional to make the NHL and he'll need to be on a team that has some big defencemen. The Flames defence is small as it is, so I don't give Billins much of a chance. He's worth a look but I'd project him to have a great career in Europe.

Exactly. Cundari is the same height but is strong and physical. Cundari has much better chance on being a NHL regular than Billins.
