I picked Bennett, Gaudreau has tonnes of skill but his size will be a problem with the day to day grid of being in the NHL.

I think Bennet ends up having a greater impact on the success of the Flames over the course of his career here in Calgary, so went with him.

Honest question, what exactly elevates him above Gaudreau and Bennett in your eyes?

Both Bennett and Gaudreau have high ceilings. Bennett though is more of a sure thing IMO. I think at worst, Bennett is a good 2nd line centre. Gaudreau has looked amazing so far, but he could also be more limited at NHL level - he won't be able to take the same liberties on Weber/Chara/ other elite NHL defencemen that he has done in college, camps and international play.

It has to be Gaudreau for me for two reasons:
1) He is a proven winner - He has won in the USHL, Frozen Four, Hobey Baker, WJC... For god's sake, he's even nominated for an espy.
2) Every time I've seen Gaudreau play, I am wowed. His ability to turn on a dime, stickhandle in a phonebooth and make unbelievable passes has me sold on him being the Flames' best prospect, not even to mention his work ethic, backchecking, turnovers, etc.

loved these threads last year!
Went with bennet. My rationale: His Reward factor is about the same or maybe less than Gaudreau's, but his risk factor is a lot lower also in my opinion.

You should probably say you tried to pick Bennett, but you misclicked. You would still be wrong because its obviously Gaudreau... but at least it's less embarrassing.

Interesting point of view.... playing the long game...
I picked Gaudreau as I think he is ready to be really really good right now at the NHL level (a lot based on his play at the World)
Monahan was not at the same level at that level of play at the same tournament.
I would be happy if Bennett was as ready to contribute at the NHL level in 3 years..... One year of junior , one year of 50-50 AHL/ NHL and then an NHL regular in year 3.
The reason I would go with Gaudreau is that he has done the development. Bennett still has a lot of work to do and is most likely years away.

Yup, in USHL he wouldn't be able to do it in College. Hmm..
In College he wouldn't be able to do it to any of the good teams or players.. hm..
Well, he won't be this good at the next level.. hm..
Well, that's only Roman Josi who he turned inside out, he's not even that good of a dman.
It's been said since we've drafted Gaudreau that he couldn't do the same things at the next level, yet he's continually been doing it. I'm willing to give it some time and proof before assuming he won't be able to do something else at the next level.

Voted Gaudreau.
Can we dispense with voting for #2 since it'll obviously be whichever one of Bennett/Gaudreau doesn't take #1?

this is where the topic gets interesting. When judging the prospects against one another in this poll, are we ranking them on where they are today in their development as players, or what we feel they will ultimately amount to at the NHL level one day?

Not possible. Can't play in the AHL until he's 20. He'd have to be in one of the CHL or NHL.

I went with Bennett because I see him as the better player when it is all said and done with the possibility of making the NHL at 18. It was really close between him and Johnny though really either at number 1 is fine by me.
Johnny is closer to the NHL but Bennett was also the top ranked chl player last year and had all the intangibles I want a top flames pick to have.

Gaudreau easily. When pro scouts say the kid has the skillset of Gretzky and that they would have paid to see him play for BC that says unreal things. If he can not let his size be an issue and I don't think it will this guy is going to be one of the top NHL players in 3-4 years, maybe sooner.

If feels like we have an abundance of very good players to choose from. A long ways from the dark days of the Flames prospect pool.
Gaudreau takes top spot for me, he has makings of a very special player.
