Default Jersey Poll - All Time #40

Did this five years ago, thought it might be interesting again. Always fun to see younger fans and older fans arguing over different generations in a battle.

Will put one up a day whenever possible.

Have fun! and Go old guys!

How it works:

I pick off a key group of players for each jersey. I don't use every name, as that gets tedious and unnecessary (probably go with say 5 unless there are many that wore the same number).

I also don't put up a guy for the number he isn't known for (Iginla shouldn't win #24 for example)

Results:

Got to be Brathwaite. Leopold should be known as #4.

Tanguay also wore 18. So have to go with Freddy here

Tanguay was a bit of a wimp, but a pretty talented one.

i had a pretty love-hate view on tanguay as a flame. That tipped the scales away from him and towards any other fathomable option.

The chants of Freddy were such a bright spot during the dark years.

First time my vote hasn't been the ballot leader. Undercoverbrother said it best.

When I I saw the #40 in the thread title I instantly thought of Tanguay. Then I came in and saw that two other guys that I liked (Brathwaite and Leopold) wore that number and I had to think for a second which one to go with.

In the end I went with Tanguay only because I think he was the "best" out of that bunch. But this should be a surprisingly interesting battle.

Tanguay for me here. Helped set-up the best forward and ARGUABLY best Flame of all time Jarome (though a case can definitely be made for Kipper). Definitely had some fantastic moments as a Flame, though definitely was a whiner and a pouter both times the organization traded him away. Still, hard to deny what he contributed to the team while he was here for the most part.

Almost chose Brathwaite here. Though he was only 'steady' and not great, he did come at a time when this organization was EXTREMELY desperate for a competent goalie. He provided that in his time with the Flames. I know I loved him, but I can't say he was ever 'great', even with a few spectacular saves.

I thought Leopold was really good here in Calgary. I liked him while he was here quite a lot, and he worked extremely well with Regehr. Just never became that offensive defencemen many believed he could become.

Nichol was all heart and soul, but his tenure was just too short. Came in just as this organization was turning around a bit leading to the '04 run. Was constantly surprised to see him in the NHL every year considering how big he was, and the kind of game he played.

Freddie made it fun during the lean years, Tanguay made it frustrating during the better times. My vote will go to Freddie (when I can get to a computer)

Tanguay with out a doubt was the more talented but fast Freddy sure had his moments. Langkow, Iginla, Tanguay was a pretty successful line for some time.

Uh, did Leopold wear 40 or 4? I think 40 was when he was back for a shortened season in 09 and Vandermeer was still here. Should that count? Either way, he was merely a stopgap in that season and shouldn't be in high consideration here.

Went with Brathwaite. He provided some excellent net minding for a few short seasons when we badly needed it. He stepped in after Tabaracci left and took over. That was the year (98/99) where we used 6 goalies because we had literally nobody until Freddy decided the job was his. He played 1A to guys like Ken Wregget, Grant Fuhr, and Mike Vernon when they were all at the very end of their careers, and despite being the better goalie by a wide margin, didn't get nearly enough time in net. He was classy and gave his all when he was in net, and that alone was worth it in those dark years. He gave us 3 of his best years at a time when we literally had zero options in net. When Turek arrived that was the end of his time, but he was arguably even better than Turek at that time. I miss Freddy Brathwaite and felt he never got enough recognition for his contributions.

Had to vote for him over Tanguay who, while being extremely talented, never seemed to give it his all over the course of a season. Even when he was a PPG player in his first year, it seemed to be a lot of feeding Jarome who did most of the work. I felt like his lackadaisical attitude crept into a locker room that was still hungry for a long playoff run. It was the beginning of the end when we acquired Tanguay IMO. Despite being a higher skilled team, we never had that edge once guys like him came to the Flames. I really despised him in his last year when he was literally mailing it in every night and couldn't wait to get traded. What a loser.

Played with Scotty growing up. Never would have thought he'd carve out a career. Still had to vote for Tanguay.

Had to go ith Freddie here, Tanguay might have been more talented but he was a quitter through and through and was a bad example to younger players.

Brathwaite for sure. I loved it when he showed up to the party. For me it was something to be excited about at that time (not much else did with the flames).
