Default Jersey Poll - All Time #42

Did this five years ago, thought it might be interesting again. Always fun to see younger fans and older fans arguing over different generations in a battle.

Will put one up a day whenever possible.

Have fun! and Go old guys!

How it works:

I pick off a key group of players for each jersey. I don't use every name, as that gets tedious and unnecessary (probably go with say 5 unless there are many that wore the same number).

I also don't put up a guy for the number he isn't known for (Iginla shouldn't win #24 for example)

Results:
1 - Roman Turek 67.8% (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=138746)

Wasn't here during his prime, but Makarov was possibly the most talented player to ever wear a Flames jersey.

Yeah he was Kent Nilsson talented ... spooky level of skill, but maybe a little more dependable to show up though his playoff numbers declined as well.

His timing was the best thing ... sliding in to replace the retiring Loob was such a good fit. Shame they didn't win more cups in that era.

Bahaha, Ed Ward vs. Sergei Makarov. That's not even a fair fight.

my enduring memory of Makarov is him killing a penalty, intercepting a pass and tearing down the ice with nobody close to catching him, and waiting to pass the puck instead of shooting it.

I remember seeing Ed Ward in the NHL's hardest shot competition. I think that was the first year that players who weren't in the all-star game could participate in the skills competition.

Makarov was awesome here. The best of the Russians at the time. I believed he was the oldest rookie to win the Calder at the age of 28. They changed the rule soon after. Ed ward well he had a hard shot.....that is all. Was it Neiwendyk, Roberts, Makarov on a line together at some point. Such a long time ago.

I definitely have great memories of Makarov and Roberts together. I remember one year their chemistry was so good that Gary said that if he reached 50 goals he would name his child after Sergei in thanks. Makarov did help him achieve that goal...although I don't think Roberts ever came through on the promise.

21 seconds, he scores a couple goals in a row. First one, if that puck was an egg it wouldn't have broken upon landing; such soft hands.

Pretty rare footage of him as a Flame. Most of the videos of his time in the NHL, online, show him as a Shark, playing with Larionov.

Between him and Nilsson, certainly probably the most skilled player the Flames ever had, Makarov likely the most accomplished international player by a long shot, Olympic wins, the KLM line, etc etc. The league-wide uproar over him winning the Calder at his older age with the Flames, made them change the rule.

I recall when Whalen interviewed him...the leadup for a week or so in advance was as if Ed was interviewing Gorbachev, since it was so rare to get an Makarov interview, as his english was pretty much non existent. They talked to his son Tom, more then Sergei.

There was an Ed Ward memory. He scored a long rage goal against Garth Snow in Vancouver, from behind the blue line I think. Anyways, as they were showing him on the bench after the goal and the mic picked up him yelling at Snow. "Hey Snowsie, whiff whiff".
