wasn't even worth putting a third option up.
amazing skill, but shaky effort vs skill and unbelievable try but a shaky off ice
had to go Fleury

I know there are a number of anti-Theo posters here but I'm not one of them. Theo had huge talent and intensity and we were lucky to have him. To me he is the best player to have ever worn the the jersey in Calgary. I don't care about his personal demons other then I wish he had been dealt a much better hand as a child. Nobody deserves that.

Duh.
The greatest contribution Nilsson made to the Flames was getting traded. And Cliff Fletcher was pilloried by local media (especially the Herald) for trading him for some nobody from Cornell.

Well, the actual trade was for the second rounder, which we used to select Joe who

I voted Fleury. But depending how you look at the question, there's a case for Nilsson. Is it contributions over their tenure, or simply how good of a player they were at any given time? Because for a while there, Nilsson was the 3rd or 4th best player in the NHL. And maybe the most talented (and yes, that includes Gretzky).

Scoring 131 points - a franchise record - is a significant contribution.

The criticism of the local media was understandable. Nilsson was coming off a season with 99 pts in 77 games. He was two seasons removed from a 104 pt season, and four from a 131 pt season, and he was still only 29 years old. He was traded, along with a 3rd round pick, for two 2nd round picks. Nobody, including Fletcher, knew Joe Niewendyk would be drafted with one of those picks.

Theo even with all his personal issues. I've rarely seen a guy that was so committed to a franchise through such a rough period. He was just such a winner and loved the city and the team. Plus, he was a helluva player that played much bigger than his size.
Nilsson was an incredible talent that didn't seem to have that same winner's instinct. The "magic man" was certainly magical, but never showed a lot of the other intangibles.

Absolutely. But there are two key moments that resulted in the Flames transforming themselves from something akin to the modern Winnipeg Jets into the contenders that won a Cup: Acquiring Lanny McDonald, and dumping Kent Nilsson for Niewuendyk. Nilsson was a great player when he wanted to be, but his trade signaled that Cliff Fletcher wasn't fooling around.

#12 & #14 should be given the same treatment as #9. You'd be lying to yourself if you voted anything but Theo.

Just amazed at the need to tell people how to vote in this. Reminds me of the global warming debate.
Black and White
With me or against me.
Unreal.
I voted Fleury because he brought it every night, and was a warrior in red. He was an ass off the ice, and a lot of that was his childhood of course.
But if a guy wants to vote for the most talented player to wear the jersey, the guy that holds the team record in points, and one of the biggest reasons for the team quickly jumping into the hearts of Calgarians ... they have that right.

Nilsson was probably the most purely talented player the Flames have ever had, but he had the work ethic of a narcoleptic tree sloth. For all of Theo's issues he was the heart and face of the Flames for a long time. Gotta go with Fleury.

His consistant poor showings in the playoffs and not getting along with coach Badger Bob Johnson were the ultimate reasons for the trade. Still I was a huge fan of his talents and what he could do with the puck.

Theo Fleury is responsible for making me, not only a Flames fan, but a hockey fan as well.

Not only the fact that he was a really good player, but Theo would stand up to anyone.
