Fact is, the Flames don’t have a prospect as good as Krebs, or a young, cost-controlled skater as good as Tuch (except for Lindholm and Hanifin), so they weren’t going to beat the Knight’s offer unless they completely gutted the prospect pool.
Again, why didn’t the Kings beat that offer? Or the Ducks? Or Rangers? Are those GMs all morons?
Given how wildly inflated some of the offers around here were - packages higher than anything we’ve seen an NHL player return in more than 20 years - there was bound to be disbelief when the deal was finally announced, and disappointment when it wasn’t the Flames.
Vegas made the highest bid in the NHL. Every other team thought that bid - a front-line but not elite C prospect, young tip-six winger on a good contract, protected first, net loss of $5 mil in cap space - was too high. There was no bidding war. Maybe the collective braintrust of the NHL had it right, and the fans bandying around wild trade proposals had it wrong.

I think it was Adams doing the leaking through his buddy Weekes. I doubt tkachuk was ever on the table from the Flames end.

With the way the contracts on this team are right now I think now was precisely the time to roll the dice and go all in. It is what it is and yes maybe GMKA was hell bent on Krebs but still… I can’t buy the notion the flames had absolutely no chance to best that offer. It looks supremely underwhelming after the 6 months of hype surrounding this debacle.

If Capfriendly is right, if everyone else in Vegas returns from IR, the Golden Knights need to clear $10,369,239 of cap (not pro-rated) before they can activate Eichel. I certainly hope no other team is willing to help them out with this.

I hope the other GM's have long memories. What Vegas did during that expansion draft was legalized extortion. I hope they end up in a world of trouble when everyone is healthy and nobody is around to help them out.

We didn't have what he wanted, so accept it and move on. It takes two parties to consummate a deal, and Vegas had what Adams wanted. You can't just stack up pieces if the individual you are working with is interesting in only one thing. If someone is looking for that mint '67 Mustang, your Porsche and Ferrari are not going to be of interest to them. It's just the way it is.

well put.
We will see it here and in a number of threads to come, but the popular sentiment among the X-box generation is that 'Why couldn't Treliving have beat that deal?'.
Doesn't matter. Buffalo wanted Krebs, as has been heavily speculated recently, and Tuch makes a lot of sense given he is a Western NY native and his contract status, $4.75M until 2026-27.
Could the Flames have beat Vegas's package? Who know. But the intent for the Flames should have been to add Eichel to this lineup without any significant subtractions so that they could be a contender. Including Lindholm, Tkachuk, Manginapane, Andresson, Hanifin makes no sense from a Flames perspective. The other unfortunate thing is apparently Adams wasn't going to do the Flames the favour of taking broken down Sean Monahan off our hands.
It was a decent package Buffalo extracted and for the Flames to have met it would have defeated the purpose, I suspect.

We don’t know that Tkachuk was offered. Pure speculation. It may have been the ask. If I’m Treliving, I’m telling Tkachuk, “Buffalo asked for you in return for Eichel. I said no. Now go out there and show them why I said no.”

Can’t believe sabres couldn’t get the first round pick to be unprotected. They really got crushed in the deal IMO. The pick this year could be, at best, 11th overall. Other recent trades of high-end players (Karlsson and Duchene) ended up as good returns for the selling team strictly because the picks ended up being top 5 picks. Sabres only shot at that is if Vegas’ pick ends up being deferred to 2023 and they finish near the bottom of the standings that year as well.

The Rangers are a division rival of the sabres. A state rival, actually.
The Kings and Ducks are rebuilding teams who have as high a chance at adding Shane Wright, Connor Bedard, Matvei Michkov etc as anyone. There's no real urgency because these teams know how to rebuild the right way.

This is good news for all of the super negative folks. Had nothing to complain about with the start this team has had. Must have been very frustrating for them.

Valimaki was so distraught he went out and blew out his knee training and missed a year and a half.

Kevin Weekes really sewered us here. Throwing Tkachuks name out there will definitely have a negative effect. The way Matthew went after Muzzingate proves he doesn’t have mental fortitude to block personal stuff out and it clearly affected his performance. I’m afraid how he will perform for the Flames now that his name was thrown out there wether it was true or not.

Or maybe he’s just the best prospect any team was willing to part with. Word was that Zegras, Drysdale, and MacTavish were always off the table for the Ducks. No hint that Byfield was ever in play. Or Lafreniere or Kakko. And there’s no analyst out there who ranks any Flames prospect higher than Krebs.

What would that look like compared to this? As an expert in melting down, this is pretty three mile island

Does the protected 1st pick defer to 2023 when it's a lottery pick (and it will be)?
