Just want to clarify, he said Tkachuk wouldn't be going to Buffalo, not that his name wasn't involved at all - unless I missed something more in depth from Strick.

As for trading him, you have to show the fanbase you tried when we get knocked out of the first round by a #7 seed Vegas team, so you can justify the rebuild.

Well that seems like a ridiculous strategy.

The Sabres are cheap bastards and they clearly wanted to move salary.
The Flames may have had the better offer but did they have a comparable player to Tuch who is decent while being both relatively cheap and cost controlled? Tkachuk is neither cheap nor cost controlled.

Well, this sucks. I sincerely believe he could be a piece to take us over the top.
However...
This is still a pretty good team as constructed. We still have a superstar in Gaudreau, and star players in Lindholm, Tkachuk, and Markstrom. We have a lot of good secondary players as well. We have some good to great prospects on their way up soon.
It's not all bad news, but this day does sting a little.
If I remind myself of the Brad Richards near miss debacle, I will remain comforted that nothing in the future is certain and the moves you don't make work out sometimes. We will have to watch what this does to Vegas long term with interest.

I would think if Treliving were just worried about saving his job he would have emptied the cupboard for Eichel. The fact he didn’t blow his brains out and trade away the team’s top prospects suggests he has the team’s long-term interests in mind.

In a way its a double whammy - Tkachuk offered up and we don't even seal the deal. Now we have Vegas (potentially) even better and Tkachuk possibly looking elsewhere

As has been mentioned the Sabres really must have really, really loved Krebs. He hasn't shown well at the pro level and was never an elite finisher. I look at this return and think it's very possible that Tuch turns out to be the best player for the Sabres in this deal. Also I have no idea why they accepted a protected 1st round pick when they are giving up by far the best player in the deal. The more I think about it, the more I think this trade is going to be a massive fail for the Sabres.

If Capfriendly is right, if everyone else in Vegas returns from IR, the Golden Knights need to clear $10,369,239 of cap (not pro-rated) before they can activate Eichel. I certainly hope no other team is willing to help them out with this.

This is not some crazy overpay by Vegas. The Flames must not have wanted him THAT badly.

Or he just does not make moves. Rumor in the summer was that he could have had Tarasenko (9 points in 7 games), Kyrou (10 points in 8 games) and Perunovich for Tkachuk. He stayed put and did not pull the trigger with team that wanted to move Tarasenko and wanted Tkachuk.

Distinct difference being that Waddell already has a known superstar centre (Aho) and a roster that's gone deep in the playoffs together.
There are a lot of reasons to want to keep the carolina roster together. There are like 6 games worth of evidence to maybe keep our core together with 3 seasons of abject failure broaching it.
The situations are not comparable. You know that.

We didn't have what he wanted, so accept it and move on. It takes two parties to consummate a deal, and Vegas had what Adams wanted. You can't just stack up pieces if the individual you are working with is interesting in only one thing. If someone is looking for that mint '67 Mustang, your Porsche and Ferrari are not going to be of interest to them. It's just the way it is.

Brad's job is to sell his deal and make it happen and I'm tired of people claiming it is video game mode to be good at your job. If Vegas is over the moon for Krebs, it's a good GM's job to up the ante another way. By again failing to close a deal it is pretty obvious that Treliving just sucks at GMing. He hasn't been able to make a serious trade that helps this team offensively since June 2018 - 3.5 years!
Instead we get a handful of poor FA signings and nibbling around the edges that has lead to more mediocrity.
