When someone makes the "rappers say it" argument, I can only assume they're referring to 'in songs'.

And say what you will about the ethical implications of Eminem using it, if he says "he thought that was how rap worked", I have no reason to disbelieve him. Because his subsequent actions indicate he learned and grew from it, and actively discourages other white rappers from using it.

Peters wasn't an aspiring rap artist. He was the coach of a pro hockey team, who didn't see a problem with what he said, in the first year of the Obama administration.

That's ####ed up. I don't accept the arguments that it's not.

Now, again... go and read these lyrics, and tell me that there's no way that someone could hear a song like this, and then complain about the lyrics in the way Bill Peters did in a moment of rage.

The song repeatedly has the words "n-----s", "f------" and "ass" in it. It's just one example of a possible song in question.

Again, if it was something like Lionel Ritchie or Usher being played and Peters said that, then by all means, call the man a monster.

It's not an invented scenario. It's plausible. Lil Jon was quite popular at that time, as were many others with lyrics of that nature.
Not that it matters (because there is no evidence at all that this was the song being played at the time), but those lyrics make no reference to anyone being fata-ed in the ass, as far as I can tell (let alone a n##### fata-ing a n##### in the ass). It may be worth noting as well that, as a bit of a hip hop head, references to anal sex strike me as quite uncommon.

I think it's incredibly important to separate racism and hatred from a moronic use of a terrible word. They're both deplorable, but I wouldn't paint them both with the same brush myself.

It's definitely all repugnant, but I think understanding what happened in 2008 impacts a lot. The allegation and the subsequent pile-on characterized Peters as a racist and abusive coach throughout his entire tenure. However, this could have also been a one-off incident that was learned from apologized for and influenced a lot of growth and in Peters' life. Up to this point, we have no clue.

But Akim's earlier characterization was flippant and repeated use and to some this suggested repeated use. It suggested that the word was used directly at him, and instead of apologizing he set out to ruin Akim's career.

By Bill's characterization, he said something he absolutely shouldn't have - and immediately apologized to the team. It suggested that he was ignorant of his terrible error, and sought to rectify and apologize for it immediately.

Those are their characterizations, and anyone is welcome to politely and constructively educate me if I've misunderstood their characterizations. Personally though, one is someone I want nowhere near my team. The other is more of a debate on "who gets a second chance" to be TBH. Without knowing much yet on how this was handled in 2008, I'm surprised he kept his job at the time. But what he did to rectify his horrible actions, and the 11 years since are important to me in forgiving someone. By all accounts, outside of the few that piled on, we've heard a lot of "I never heard or saw anything similar from Bill"

I've known many good people to have a terrible grasp of offensive things - but they're great people. Not one of them has ever held their stance when challenged on their offensive

One group has been systemically persecuted, enslaved, and even at one time it was okay to murder them. The other group not so much. Your example is not a great look for that coach, but it's not even remotely close to the Peters' situation.

CBC Alberta @ Noon taking callers on this issue if anybody wants to shout about it on the Radio.

First caller says we should forgive him because he apologized and everybody makes mistakes. Also, Trudeau.

Oh god, "everyone relax, it's just a word 10 years ago", it's just a "bad word". Why did I start listening?

Are you surprised that there are racists in Alberta? I'm not. Although subjectively things have gotten better, the root or these issues still exist. Growing up in rural Alberta students at my high school spray painted KKK on the school wall as a 'joke', that was in 2010. Walking to work in 2017 I say a series of posters promoting a White Nationalist group citing how immigration was a threat. Sitting in a bar room last weekend, I over heard people explain why they hated Natives. This isn't a fan base issue, its a cultural issues.

Yes, it's why I try to stay away from the off-topic forum. And it's not just one side that's posting crap.

Three Hills was a metropolis compared to where Peters moved to and grew up (Killum).

Meh, in a group as large and diverse as Flames fandom, I know there will be people who hold views/opinions with which I strongly disagree. At least we are all united by the constant pain of cheering for a cursed organization.

I hate generalizing but anything east of the QE II is a hot bed for xenophobia.

More and more I am finding that the people with opinions that fall more into the middle of the road on issues like these or in general don't get their panties in a bunch one way or the other, tend to not post online or on social media as much as those on the extreme sides of any argument

The silent majority is a thing, and they tend to be sick of the rhetoric on both sides of any "issue du jour"
