I'm going Mason McDonald. ... lots of bounce back stories in prospect projections, why not McDonald.

I don't know enough about any of the other guys, so my proximity bias gives the edge to Zach Fischer. He looked good this past season.

so ironic that it's a Mason McDonald vs Hunter Smith duel. Two 2nd round picks that haven't worked out as of yet in a sea of others that have.

Pretty much a pick-em at this point. I wouldn't argue with anyone's choice or justification for said choice. These last few are all long shots to be NHLers IMO, but there are probably some qualities that people prefer over others. It was down to Mattson, Joly, and Fischer. I went with the Fischer because he scored a point per game in the WHL this year (including playoffs), and he's got...um...truculence. I'm hopeful that he can be a bottom 6 winger at some point in the future.

Between Carroll and Smith for me, but I went for Smith again. I like my truculent wingers.

Round 26 seems too high for Hunter Smith. He should be in the 30's in my opinion. He's embarrassing.

For perspective, Ferland was ranked 26th in the summer of 2013.

I went with Zach Fischer. He seems to have that "guts of the game" quality that Treliving talked about with Tkachuk. He looked like he had an impressive amount of skill at the development camp too.

At this point I go with the goalie because you can never know with goalies, and that gives a goalie more upside than anyone else on the list.

I was going to berate every other choice but I'll keep it positive with 6'3" Joly as my pick.
Quote:
"Halfway through the year, we weren't very sure of him," Flames director of amateur scouting Tod Button admitted. "But as the year went on and the playoffs went on, our scouts in Quebec - our three scouts - they really liked him and they really pushed for him."
|
Quote:
Joly is a hard-working winger with some offensive upside and physicality. Great acceleration and good top speed, though not the smoothest skater as he is still growing into his frame but he has an incredibly quick step. He can both play the physical dump and chase game or the finesse game dekeing his way around you with the combo of his speed and quick hands game. He can power his way to the net or stay to the outside creating an open space in the middle for a teammate, hitting them with a crisp pass.
|
I like his upside.

Karnaukhov and Rafikov are in a whole other tier skill-wise compared to the rest, though Smith would be my "most likely to play an NHL game" pick out of the group.

They might be on another tier skill-wise, but unfortunately for the Flames, that tier appears to be in Russia.

Flames hold the rights to Russian players until they are 27.
Flames hold the rights to Adam Fox until he is 21.
There is risk of those guys never coming over, moreso because they might just not have the talent to be regular/impactful NHLers and it would be a poor career move for them, but there is risk of a guy like Adam Fox never signing for us, as was the case with Brandon Hickey.
I would prefer to rank the Russians based on what they could do at the NHL level someday, not where they have elected to develop. I don't really know what the answer to that is, since I haven't seen enough of either, but I don't think burying them in the rankings because they are in Russia is reasonable.

I think rating prospects is a function of potential talent (ceiling), along with likelihood of actually making it and contributing.
Those guys have some talent - possibly more than some of the others now being voted ahead of them - but their likelihood of ever playing for the Flames is very low.
For me, that has to be factored in, and is why they are still on the list.
