It's baaaaaaaaaaaaaack

Calgarypuck's 5th Annual Prospect Ranking Poll Series

Here are the last 5 years for a quick glance ...

Happy voting!

Who will join Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, Sam Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk as the top prospect. Previous four have gone straight to the show.

I still really like the upside of Healey, D'Artagnan, McDonald, Mattson, Sveningsson.
Schneider too has shown some nice flashes and is still a pup by goalie standards.

Fischer, Caroll, and Smith could all trickle through. Fischer showed some serious hands at dev camp perhaps explaining his 5th round selection, Caroll has all the skills and tools to be a better Bouma, and Smith was surprisingly productive at 5 on 5 in the AHL as a 21 year old who isn't physically "complete" yet.

Rafikov and Karnaukhov will probably be full-timers in the second best league after the NHL next year while both are still U23. We hold their rights until they turn 27 so if they decide to come over we will have exclusive dibs on two potentially NHL-caliber 24-26 year olds vets with good toolsets.

Crazy. Is this the deepest our pool has ever been? I mean some might say our worst prospect is Brett Pollock and that might be harsh on a guy who had a decent junior career and is still 21.

For sure. Crazy to think that even the worst prospect is still a decent prospect. Usually there's at least one or two Riley Bruce types but this year there isn't

I am surprised that I'm the only one who has voted for D'Artagnon Joly. Seems to have both size and offensive upside.

Not a bad pick.

Admittedly I haven't followed his progression, or lack there of BUT I'm surprised McDonald has fallen so far from grace. From WJC Team Canada goalie to the bottom of our prospect rankings.

I like MacDonald as a prospect. Good size, awesome athleticism - he has a lot of really good things working out for him.

I can't speak for everyone, but his consistency is what brings him far down for me at this point. He just hasn't been able to do really well consistently. He makes out of this world saves, but then lets in an easy stinker... and then often another.

I hope the Flames give him time and end up re-signing him somehow. I think if he is going to make it, it is just going to be a much longer-term plan for him. I have Schneider ahead of him as well right now, and Mason firmly in the last spot.

Kipper, Vernon, Brathwaite - these have been historically the Flames most consistent goalies. Elliott, Kidd, Hiller, etc., etc., etc., were all relatively proven goalies in their careers, but always had some level of problem with consistency. To me, that is what separates an elite goalie from a backup. Mason has been too inconsistent for me up until this point to even have me project him as a backup.

Once again, I am not saying he doesn't have NHL potential, and I am a big fan of a lot of his tools (and I love goalies who are really athletic - I really like Brossoit for that exact thing), but he has to find a way to just become more consistent. That is the key with me and goalies. A long term, patient plan with him might work out. I just see other goalies passing him at this time.
