Went with Rafikov. Maybe if he improves significantly then he will attempt to play in the NHL.

The Russians should have been picked long ago even considering that they're never going to come over.

Based on talent, sure. However, being 99% confident as I am that they will stay in Russia completely negates them being a Flames' asset. I am simply pretending that they don't exist. It makes it less complicated.

Voted Schneider based on the fact that the Russians aren’t coming over. If they were to come over they would be way higher

I’m voting the Russians over Mattson though for sure. Mattson’s stats are worse than 16 year old nobodies

Me too. I hate voting on “likelyhood to play” as opposed to raw potential but I make an exception when players choose to stay overseas.

Schneider is the only one remaining who will likely ever play a professional game in North America.

So, no chance of 6'4" Centre Mitchell Mattson becoming a Big Jankowski 2.0?

His numbers don't look good and he's been playing at a pretty low level. USHL in his draft+2 year. Jankowski went NCAA for his draft+1 year and then improved year over year until he graduated.

I wouldn't bet on it. He's already two years since his draft and still hasn't played a college game. That's a pretty big red flag.

Spoiler!

He's been in the USHL for the last two seasons and hasn't really done anything to stand out.

He also hasn't attended the last two Flames development camps, which is also not a good sign for the team's interest in him.

-----

You can compare Mattson to Spencer Foo, who also played two years after his draft eligibility before starting college. In his final year in the AJHL, Foo was his team's leading player. He scored almost twice as many goals as anyone else on his team.

Last season, Mattson finished 10th on his team in points. Of the 9 players ahead of him, only one has been drafted.

I hear that with Rafikov, he's Russian through and through. Kharnakhov played for the Hitmen though, so he's been to the city and knows what to expect if he improves enough to be a factor for the Flames.

I dunno. If he was really interested in making the NHL a priority, the AHL would be a quicker route. Instead he likely chased some sure money playing in the KHL rather than toiling in Stockton for years on an AHL salary. Which is fine, I get why he did that, but if he's more comfortable in Russia, I don't see why he would come back any time soon. You might see him back in the NHL after the Flames' rights to him expire.

It should also be noted that he's struggled to stick in the KHL and has played more often in the lower league. I think as of right now he's not necessarily better than any of the career AHLers on this list.
