I'm starting to wonder if I should apply for a job with the Flames. Lots of openings all of a sudden.
I can't really skate, but I could totally sign contracts all day if that helps.

It truly is the most Flames thing ever to look at probably going into a rebuild the first year after a generational talent is in the draft.

I've been very hard on Tre but the more I see how this all unfolded the more I think he did well considering the hand he was dealt. Obviously you think he is hot garbage that's fine, he's gone now.

Funny you picked Risto though as our management group (including Tre) wanted to trade for him until Chris Snow shut that down.
To me the worst outcome is if things stay as they are. No realistic playoff chance and no good draft pick to bolster the prospect pool. No hope to improve and no shot at the cup. Woof.

Philly has a chance at this these things THIS year. Same with the Canucks. They made these moves in 2021. They regretted them almost the instant the season started, and they'll finally get decent 1st round picks these season, but even then they don't have realistic shots at Bedard.
We are where the Canucks were months before they made that trade for OEL. We haven't even gone through that yet.
It can absolutely get worse. That's all I'm saying.

If guys like Lindholm, Backlund, etc want out and you’re in a market that most players don’t want to come to, what choice do you have but to rebuild?

Burn it all to the ground! At least that would be a new approach instead of the constant treadmill of mediocrity we've had to put up with for 30 years. This is a chance to do something different at least, we're continually losing new generations of fans because they never get to experience any sort of playoff success. I'm still clinging on to 1989, but it's getting harder...

Can't remember which podcast talked about this recently, think it was 32 Thoughts, but they brought up how non marquee teams need to really step up their game to compete with more desirable markets like NYC, Vegas, etc. The Flames have historically done that by being a classy organization, great city to raise a family, etc. Now, with the oldest arena in the league, pandemic border shutdown, losing your 2 stars after a 1st round win, followed by an awful year under Sutter, no wonder there's players who want out.

late to this. I've always liked Tre, but after 9 years in the organization, I'm not against a breath of fresh air. So in isolation, parting ways is not the end of the world.
The concerning part is that a clear indication of where we're headed and where the owners see us. It very much feels like a power struggle that ultimately was won by Sutter, and that is scary. Sticking with Sutter and squashing any notions of bigger changes are the worst possible move going forward IMO, sooo ... that freaking blows.
Thanks for everything, Tre. I do think he did well for the most part of his tenure here, and by all accounts, he's an all-around good person.

So, why is he worse?
You wanted a rebuild, right? In what world do you think Treliving would have given you one?
|
I'm posting as if the Flames won't be rebuilding as we are constantly told by people close to the team that we won't.
So yes, I want a rebuild, but know it won't happen.
In that scenario, Treliving was by far the best hope going forward.

Doesn't scare me at all. If they are on the cusp of falling back asswards into a rebuild, at least they are finally doing it. It was always likely something that would have to be forced onto this organization. I'll take it, however it comes. If its going to be a clown show for a season or two, so be it.

I'm mixed on this. Tre was clearly a really good person and made the Flames organization a great place to work. Players have said great things about him. Journalists have said great things about him. Coworkers have said great things about him.
Yet, I can't help but look at his body of work and see it as very average. Playoffs in about half the seasons. Got out of the first round every other year of making the playoffs. That is statistically average.
His body of work...some really great trades / UFA signings (Hamilton, Tanev) offset by really bad ones (Hamonic, Neal, Brouwer). His biggest mistakes - Tkachuk bridge deal, Kadri/Huby signing, JG walking, Brodie walking, Gio walking - are pretty glaring. I really do wonder if he has a particularly good eye for talent or managing the cap.
I watched the exit interviews and genuinely wondered if the problem in the room was Sutter, Huby or Kadri or all three. Of if different players had problems with different people. Outside of Kadri and Huby, I haven't heard of a single player that has an issue with Sutter. I can't help but wonder if the other player exit interviews threw serious shade at Huby and/or Kadri. And that would have put Tre in a huge bind, where maybe it just made most sense to walk away.

The decade Treliving spent building this team he showed no signs of being able to build a contender. The two good regular seasons the teams had were totally undone in the playoffs. He should've been let go years ago, good riddance.

Boomer made a great point earlier about Conroy, something along the lines of "If you didn't believe in me today..."
