99 times out of a hundred that is a goal. Not sure you can fault a player on a lucky save.

He had a rough game too. A number of good chances, couldn't bury one.

One thing about the coaching is I didn't love how they managed OT.

97-29-8 didn't look good in OT all tournament.

They almost lost against the Czechs when those 3 got lost in coverage. They almost lost on the first OT shift today where Binnington made a good save. And then finally caught up to them on those guys second shift of OT (which also was too quick as it seems like Cooper didn't trust anyone else)

McDavid with Celebrini or Marner probably made more sense as those guys had shown more chemistry in the past

People still talk about the Canada Cups and the Summit Series. The 4 Nations will be remembered, especially given the political context of the time. There's no need to diminish it because McDavid scored the winning goal.

Nah. It was made up.
Always nice to win but meaningless in the overall

It is a lesser tournament though to be fair

I just want to say a heartfelt thanks to everyone for all the good energy and passion and not letting this thread get derrailed. I personally appreciate this (and all of you) more than many will ever know. Gold was within reach and we just didn't close it out.

It was a hard fought match and the vast majority of posters were discussing (or arguing) in good faith. Canada will be back in two or four years time, looking forward to more clashes with the US.

Sure. But people will still remember it the way they remembered Canada Cups. Hockey hasn't had a consistent format for international tournaments (like the FIFA world cup for example). Its all a patchwork of random tournaments over the years. It was great to win that 4 nations tournament.

Sure but this wasn’t that situation. It wasn’t some rush from the Americans here Canadian support was trapped deep flat footed with Americans with speed the other way. Makar wasn’t flat footed and Mcknnion was well behind them.

Here’s the shot of how things looked when McDavid gave up the puck. All 3 Americans low, McKinnon not even on the picture.

Two seconds later, American player with the puck, the situation well in control for Canada with two defenders behind the puck.

Except then Makar tried to pick off the pass to exit the zone. McDavid has to slow up in case that interception is successful.

It isn’t.

McKinnon then HAS to win this loose puck battle. Even a sweep into the corner or along the boards would be good, but the US player got possession as is.

Whatever, Makar took the risk to make the play and win the gold. He missed on the pinch.

He handled he US exit different then what Toews and Marnr did the shift before when then puck back after Celebrinis miss, and there was no more speed or momentum that the US had exiting the zone after the McDavid missed shot attempt. To pin this on McDavid unsuccessful in his attempt is incorrect.

The Olympics don't appear on the periodic table, every hockey tournament is made up.

The 4 Nations was great, but it isn't on the same level with the Olympics and some of the other great tournaments. And that's okay.

It isn't for prestige but just the fact that the overtime is 5v5 gives it more credibility IMO.

Miracle 2.0 for the Americans. We win that game 9 out of 10 times. If there was ever any doubt Canadian hockey is in a great place.

The final was a fantastic hockey game, for sure. And 5 on 5 OT is the only acceptable way to end a final.

Ugh, I hated that such a big game, with such intensity, had to be finished in a 3 on 3 arcade style finish.

Credit to the US, it was a great team. Disappointed that the Canadians didn’t capitalize at all. I continue to see why mcdavid just hasn’t ever captained a team to any championship. He did not have a great game today.

I hate that Canada lost, to the Americans, no less. But Matthew tkachuk continuing to dominate mcdavid year in and year out is kinda hilarious
