At some point, Honzek and others will earn a spot. Then they'll be here. Simple as that.

They aren’t that simple in reality. If Honzek outplays Farabee, are coaches going to have the latter watch 50 games from the press box? Salaries, tenure, and egos play a big part in who dresses.
If you want to see how a strict game-by-game meritocracy works, look at a team coached by Tortorella. It can get a lot of juice out of the lineup in the short term, but ends up alienating both players and management.

Yep, I don't see Honzek or Stromgren getting a spot, nor Kerins (not sure he is an NHLer),
Question, area is defense, if they trade Andersson, Miromanov needs to go, not sure on Bean either, would guess the Flames will sign an UFA dman for sure,
Morton has a chance for to center the 4th line
I would bet they will sign Kirkland, and he is the 12th/13th forward.

No chance, Honzek is not ready in my opinion, will need another year at AHL,

If Honzek outplays Farabee then Farabee will be on the 4th line. If they are playing the same level then Farabee gets the nod.

None taken
Its grim, but we all knew that.
The lack of superstar power on our end is absolutely detrimental to our success.
This is why I have a hard time criticizing the "tank for ___" crowd.
You simply don't have superstars fall into your lap outside of drafting in the top 3 very often. Especially when your in a less desirable market, though the new rink coming will surely help us a bit.
Flames need home run picks, we REALLY need to to try our absolute best to get a McKenna or DuPont or both and given how terrible of a roster we have, we simply cant afford to dabble in mediocrity for another decade.
Here's to holding on to hope.

If Honzek outplays Farabee, but the coaches prefer what Lomberg brings to the 4th line to what Farabee brings, does Farabee sit in the press box? Will Frost sit in the press box if he’s outplayed? Not a chance, given the contract he’ll have and the fact the GM recently brought him in.

Brayden Point was also way too small, put up numbers at every level. In his D+3 year point put up 40 points in the NHL. In Rossi’s D+4 year he put up 40 points. In Point’s D+4 year he put up 66, in Rossi’s D+5 year he put up 60.
I would much rather have Rossi for what it would likely cost to get him than to go crazy trying to get #2 pick.
|
It's actually even better for Rossi than you're saying, because he just had his D4 (not his D5).
So yeah. He's basically tracking exactly like Point. On a worse team.
And that other dude thought he was "another mid 6 guy". Lol Rossi is a top line player today.

Agreed, not to mention the Flames are extremely thin at center,
That takes Frost out the conversation, with the forwards.
Honzek, in my opinion is way down the list in terms of the depth chart

I personally use sixty points as the barrier between first and second line players as far as descriptive matters go. As much as we praise wolf kadri had a first line season. Both frost and backs had bottom six seasons.
Adding rossi, who scored 60 points as a 22-23year old, would change the dynamics of this team immensely. Even if we expended a bunch of assets to sj for the 2nd pick, misa has a long way to go to do what rossi has already done.
Kadri-rossi-frost-backs
Edit.
I want to add i fully expect a lot better season from frost next year. Adding a Rossi would absorb some if the expected decline from kadri, although kadri seems to be showing he is as tough as old nails.

When it comes to Forwards I think Klapka has elevated his way onto the permanent roster, again baring anything significant happening.
Its the bubble guys I'm really not sure with, we've got a bit of a log jam right now and a number of "young" guys that could really push for spots in the bottom 6.
Assuming the top 6 looks like this:
Huberdeau - Kadri - Coronato
Coleman - Backlund - Zary
_____ - _______ - ______
Lombo - ______ - Klapka
That leaves a plethora of guys for the last 4 spots.
I cant see us having room for Rooney anymore.
Sharky
Frost
Farabee
Pospisil
Mantha? - big unknown at this point
Then guys pushing:
Kerins
Hunt
Kirkland
Morton
Honzek - made the team last year
Stromgren
This is before any UFA's or trades.
I think the Flames have a number of depth guys they could look to flip into more youthful pieces this year honestly, or picks at the draft.
Just about everyone of the guys listed as pushing, could easily slot in the bottom 6 and I'd argue that any of the depth guys from the NHL roster last year could easily slot in the top 6 as well.
|
I don't really see Backlund and Coleman as top 6 anymore..

Semantics?
Third line players that play a shut down role and with that get the 2nd most minutes.

I agree. I also wouldn't be surprised if one if not both are traded in the next year. Backlund may want to finish his career with a contender, same with Coleman.

Probably a case of being overhyped on here, but he’s lost a a ton of development time to injury yet still put up a very similar season to Zary’s first year in the AHL at the same age.
Hopefully he keeps progressing and gets a full season under his belt and we see him in the NHL on a more full time basis in 26/27.

How is the defense shaping up:
I really hope both Parekh and Brzustewicz make the team this upcoming season.
Then, you have Weegar and Bahl. Potentially Hanley as the #6-7. Andersson is a question mark.
Weegar
Bahl
Parekh
Brzustewicz
Hanley

Our forward depth in the NHL is not pretty to look at. Yeesh.
We badly need some elite players up front. Will be hard to draft high with a goalie like Wolf and a semi-competent defense in front of him.
Classic Flames. Never truly bad enough to get a top pick, never truly good enough to win.
