[QUOTE=Enoch Root;8915873]People think (rightly, IMO) that the quality of the broadcasts will be better.
Most Oiler games are done in 4K. The Flames games are done through a coke bottle.[/QUOTE
this is just not true. They often use the exact same production trucks and almost all of the games for both cities are done in 1080i format.

I assume that nothing will actually change with a new national deal. Both networks are pretty much the same.

I was really hoping TSN would pick up the Flames like they did with Winnipeg and Ottawa. With SN wanting Edmonton I figured they'd be able to nab it for a better price.
Whenever I watch a Flames Leafs game with a TSN broadcast I sure am jealous though.

Not a big fan of Millen, just seems to get a lot of stuff...wrong, names, plays that happened. My vote still goes to MM.

The CBC would ruin it with their pathetic and exaggerated coverage of the stinkin' Leafs. The other canadian teams would be regionalized on the various CBC stations. Time shift channels would be necessary and some games would not be shown. The CBC still thinks HNIC is in the 1970s to 1990s era.

TV and radio are far far different. MM would be significantly lost on TV with her experience to this point.
Millen after he started the month or so before the Dallas series formed a rest good repoire with Ball and has carried on since.
Old school but seems much more natural in his analysis and calling things as they are and now more familiar with the Flames, I think he is excellent and more and more Flames focused and enjoy listening to him more.
Hrudey should stay in the panel but he doesn't want to move to Toronto and my guess is his gig of getting flown out there weekly and then staying in a hotel for 8 weeks in the playoffs is coming to an end.
Hrudey as color seems much more neutral, as if he's doing games for a national audience, not a regional one, and goes well out of the way to talk about the positivity of the coach or players on the other team..similar to how he analyzes and speaks on the panel.

Ball is fantastic, probably one of the best play by play guys there are for hockey. I especially appreciate how he calls a pretty even game, like when the other team scores you can actually tell, and there's excitement in his voice.
Hrudy is a great guy, I remember back in the day when there were barely any Flames games that were televised without having Centre Ice and I'd go to Sheleileghs to watch Flames games and he'd be sitting there watching like the rest if us. We all knew who he was, but just left him alone.
BUT.. I think that he's kind of losing his touch as a colour guy. I think he's a great analyst for the national broadcasts, but I don't really love him doing colour. I actually really like Greg Millen and Ball together. But I also think it would be pretty sweet if the Flames had colour from Meaghan Mikkelsen on TV. I never listen to The Fan now that I'm in BC, and I absolutely detest Derek Wills, so I didn't even realize she normally does colour on the radio now? But yeah, Wills can't call a game to save his life. His intonation is just the worst.

Not that it matters anymore but the idea of Rogers signing Ohtani meaning they are getting out of the NHL so they can be all MLB all the time made no sense.
The seasons barely overlap. Would they show random baseball games in January to fill time? They are big on the Jays when the Jays play - they own 100% of the team. Why wouldn't they all be all Jays already? The Jays just can't fill 3 channels (if you consider SN Ontario, West, Pacific, East all one station.
Moving $$ to MLB payroll - sure.

|
That works in the US because there is lot of different companies vying for the rights - Turner/Max, ESPN/ABC/Disney+, NBC/Peacock, CBS/Paramount Plus, Fox, Amazon, Apple. So you can still get competition and drive up prices.
If Rogers and Bell are willing to team up for NHL rights - who else is the NHL going to bring in to drive up prices - you'd need some streamer to decide to go after it - maybe Amazon would consider it but otherwise you're probably looking at DAZN or something like that would cause giant rage. CBC would only get involved again if prices go way down. Would be a giant stretch for Corus/Global to bid.
I assume they would split it in terms of Hockey Night in Canada/Saturday as one package and the other days as the other package - but NHL would still need both Bell and Rogers to compete for both packages to get the value they want.

It was never about filling time slots. Considering the disaster their last NHL deal has been, the payroll dollars + the money required to fully capitalize on a draw the size of Ohtani would have meant significantly reduced ability and appetite to make as substantial a commitment to the NHL.
It’s entirely likely they still would have (and will) bid on NHL rights, it would have just been the nail in the coffin for anything even remotely close to their last deal.

I expect that TSN and RSN will go back to shared coverage. I don't see either network putting up the kind of money for sole coverage like the current deal.

I don't see TSN as a big improvement necessarily. They have some on air folks I like, but we're only a couple of years removed from them shutting down all their western Canada radio stations without warning to focus on Ontario where they felt they got more bang for their buck. They left behind a network of ridiculously awful stand-up comedy stations which i assumed was a placeholder for whatever they really wanted to do with those stations. Then after two years of irrelevancy they shut them all down completely.
Don't think they'll be more western-Canada focused than the other Toronto-centric network.
