Vladar was flat out terrible and probably should never play a game for us ever again.
He was shaky in Buffalo as well.
After getting benched during his winning streak last year he's been pretty awful.

You missed some excellent hockey from Detroit
And the usual breakdowns from Calgary

Pretty good, I'd say.
I think we'll all be forgetting they played here and there as this season progresses. This team isn't providing a very exciting product early on.
I'm a glutton for punishment, but not slow, boring punishment. At least give this trainwreck fireballs and shrapnel, culminating in a lottery pick or something.

I figured this game would be a tough one. Detroit parted together a half decent lineup in the offseason. They have a lot of dangerous forwards.
As for the Flames. They are slowly starting to look like last years team. At least that game sure did.
- shakey goaltending
- poor defensive coverage
- good PK
- decent PP (which is different)
- anemic forwards 5 on 5
- tons of turnovers.
I know Sutter took a lot of the blame for last season. But I’m still seeing a lot of the same problems. No game breaker is a massive problem.
Anyway. That was their worst game in my mind against a hot team without Anderson. But some flags are starting to go up.

If you take away his people relations skills, then it’s quite clear that the former coach was on to something. He basically said this team lacked game breakers and top end skill. With his pedigree of winning multiple cups, coach of the year it would have been prudent to listen to his assessment.
No since looking back but his opinion (outside of his personality) should have been taken more seriously by management. Changing the culture was a good thing but dismissing his hockey takes is probably not a great decision. Only time will tell.

to be fair Sutter said the same thing about talent the year before and every other year...every team he has ever coached "sucked"...its was part of the motivation

He was not on to something with his 4th line deployment though.
That was outright sabotage.

Can’t argue much there. Only thing I can think of is that he didn’t want to reward guys like Kadri and Huberdeau with more minutes based on their play. Gave minutes to grinders with “workmanlike” attitudes (not saying I agree with that approach).

That is a Sutter tactic though. Brent said it, Darryl said it
Even when they had Johnny and Tkachuk, the message was that they weren’t a skill team, they couldn’t rely on one or two guys
It was not true, but it was a way to get everybody buying in to the team concept
It was quite transparent, to be quite honest

Let’s face it, the best case scenario for this franchise is for the team to be in last place at US Thanksgiving and be way out of it by the trade deadline.
You should be able to net two first round picks at least plus maybe some decent prospects for Hanifin and Lindholm. Maybe you get some picks for Tanev and Zadorov.
You can’t be a contender with Huberdeau and Kadri on those contacts, you just have to ride them out. DO NOT extend anymore UFAs. It’s time to rebuild this thing. This isn’t an early season over reaction, we’ve seen this team for near 90 games now, they are what they are.

I don’t think there is much more to say about this team, it should have been blown up when we lost our two stars.

I was thinking almost the same thing last night. There was a sequence where the Flames were killing a penalty and I didn’t notice that it was over. Until I started counting and noticed they had 5 guys on the ice again. It’s such a passive defence it looks like they are coached not to touch anyone on the other team. Just to shadow them as they skate around the perimeter. But never engage.
How exactly are you supposed to get the puck?

If they went 2-3-1 over a 6 game stretch mid season, no one would bat an eye.
Early season struggles are common league wide for even some of the best teams (which the flame are not among the best, middling I would say).
They could easily go 4-1-1 in the next 6 an turn it right around.
Enjoy hockey. Minus last night they are playing much better hockey this year.
The team is top end in the league in high danger scoring chances for.
They have the worst PDO in the league.
Once this normalizes,.they will go on a very fun run.

i hear the term in the NFL, and Huberdeau is a JAG (just another guy). If you had someone who has never watched hockey before watch a flames game and then you ask them, who stuck out to you? It certainly wouldn't be him they mention, he is almost invisible out there. Any other team, you can tell who their main talent is just by watching. Brutal.

And yet he and anyone on his line end up dominating possession and high danger chances.

I don't know what analytics say but i go more with the eye test and he isn't all that noticeable out there. I said earlier i feel like he wont get 70 points, and i really hope i am wrong. I don't see it.

Eye tests are notably reliable.

Two superstars left. Treliving’s marching orders from ownership was to not take a step back. So Treliving and the rest of the management team replaced them with the best players available (Huberdeau was by far the best player offered for Tkachuk and Kadri was the second-best UFA available on the market).
I guess it’s tempting to believe a different GM would have taken the team in a different direction. But from what we’ve heard about Edwards, that’s just wishful thinking.
Doesn’t matter who the GM is - this team will not rebuild until ownership changes its attitude towards the franchise.

sure lets go with analytics. Huberdeau is clearly a superstar. What we see means nothing. When i see a player like Makar/Mcdavid, my eyes are decieving me, average at best. Thanks for your insight
