Don't hate the return but would have rathered a good prospect instead of a 3rd to fill the Wranglers since it looks like a few will be joining the Flames this year.

Chase Stillman (Corys kid) might have been attainable.

Mikael Backlund is a top shutdown center in this league that just finished scoring a career high 56 points playing versus top players without his best friends Tkachuk and Frolik. At age 34. With a King Clancy trophy now. You're not going to replace that for less money.

Not if he's hurt. Or having a bad season.

There's no point in gambling just for the sake of gambling. The Flames liked the player and liked the pick and pulled the trigger while Toffoli was healthy and coming off a career year. Tough to fault them for that. Bonus was getting some cap space immediately as well.

Underwhelming return. I thought he’d get at least a late first.

Might be better to hold onto these guys until the trade deadline.

Completely disagree with this. This is one where the charts are wrong. I don't see Toffoli repeating last season's numbers. Jersey plays a high tempo game where Toffoli's lack of foot speed is going to be painfully obvious. I don't see him being installed on the 1st unit PP and being the coach's first choice to jump over the boards. He'll be handled very differently with the Devils and his scoring will drop off significantly. I expect the same would be true with the Flames and their new staff coming in. A drop off is inevitable.

Frankly I kind of figured Toffoli was worth a 2nd based on his age and skillset. Once the market was set with the swaps of players for cap space I was concerned. The Newhook deal helped re-calibrate, but it was obvious the market was soft and big returns weren't there. Getting a middle six player with potential for more, along with a third round pick, seems about right. I saw the return and was immediately going "meh" as it was not overwhelming or underwhelming. It was about what you would expect for a 31 year old on an expiring contract. People expecting a 1st haven't been paying attention.

I expected Conroy's first deal to be conservative as he dips his toe in the pool, so this was along the lines of that expectation. He did okay to good. Toffoli was not in the long-term plans of the team, so he made a deal he was comfortable with. This one could have been way worse.

If we are actually going to compete for the division the smarter play would have been to trade Toffoli straight up for picks, hopefully get a 2nd and 3rd in this years draft and sign Yegor to a 3 year 9.3 million dollar deal and give up the 2024 2nd for him. 20024 2nd would have been around 50th-58th then and if we had gotten a 2nd and 3rd in this years draft we would be ahead in draft capital and have the player. Doubt the Devils want a guy who they healthy scratched in the playoffs at 3.1.

We don't have to worry about that happening because it's the Flames. I could understand this post more if we were fans of a winning organization but we are fans of one of the bottom 10 organizations in the NHL so doom and gloom is a byproduct of the organizations mishaps over the decades. The Flames after all are probably the shining example of NHL mediocrity for the last 30 years. Sure some fans may come off as doom and gloom but that's what happens when the team you cheer for lets you down on a nearly annual basis. Personally I always hope for the best even though that hasn't got me anywhere for almost 30 years but it's really hard to not fear the worst because that typically is the end result with the Flames.

This trade isn't terrible IMO. It's a little underwhelming and it's totally fine for posters to state their opinion good or bad as the Flames haven't earned the benefit of the doubt.

So, in summary, the smarter play would have been to trade Toffoli and a 2024 2nd, for Yegor, and a 2023 2nd and 3rd.

Hard to argue that getting a better return from NJ wouldn’t be smarter, but have you considered that a better deal wasn’t on the table, or I guess Conroy would have taken it?

I’m kinda turning around to the deal but honestly it’s an internal justification as a fan that’s starting to do that.

I’m not thrilled with the return. He will definitely put up more points than last year given more ice time, but it’s not a deadline rental situation. They got Toffoli for a full season at his career high. I think most fans thought that would garner a bit more. I guess it didn’t and the flames pivoted to wanting someone to play to fill out the roster while also providing more youth until the inevitable Lindholm deal which will bring in more picks who will show up in a few years.

Anyway, I think a lot of fans are now self justifying but I don’t think it was a great return given he was at his career high and you get a full year of service at a cheap price. Not to mention a terrible free agent year. Thought things would’ve lined up well. Equivalent of a 2nd and a 3rd rounder. They do have to hit Lindholm out of the park.

It's clear that someone in the organization does or this trade doesn't happen.

A top 6 scorer on a good contract is attractive to a contender, expiring a not.

NJ gave up a guy they no longer want and a mid round pick for a proven top 6 guy with an affordable contract . It’s a win for them easily

For the Flames, the risk is much bigger. Neither asset is a sure thing that will help them. But Conroy obviously like Sharangovich so we’ll see if he is right. The Flames pro scouting has not been right that often under Treliving.

As a few others have stated, the trade needs a few years to be rightly evaluated and I am cautiously optimistic about Sharangovich. But, I definitely do like what Conroy is trying to do. Move older players out before they are lost for nothing, take chances on young players with upside, sell high/buy low, get more picks, get cap, get faster . . . there is a lot to like about the move if you step back a little and don't focus only on last year's production from the two players. And, there is very little difference between a mid second and mid third pick in terms of pick outcome so that is not that much of an issue to me.

Based on Toffoli's comments - the Flames didn't want him beyond this year at his contract demands. So he was gone after this year as well. Neither team was particularly enamoured with their guy.

This may have come out of the blue for fans, but a week ago Lebrun reported that the Devils were getting “a ton of calls” on Sharangovich. So clearly the Flames aren’t the only team that saw a lot of potential in the player.

https://theathletic.com/4616800/2023...ck-nhl-lebrun/

I’m curious about what the Flames see him slotting in the lineup. He was used almost exclusively as a LW in Jersey, but he’s said to be able to play all forward positions (presumably from his time in Russia?).

It's kind of funny that this was Conroy's first trade because the comments give me serious deja vu to the Stillman/Conroy swap.

I think that’s fair. He is at an age where he should’ve done more but let’s see. I’ve mentioned it before that the Devils enabled his fast shot with great puck movement. While the Flames aren’t building around him he probably needs the same enablement, so I’m hoping the Flames do a 180 and let their stars shine through more puck movement, skating and creativity. Also helps attract talent by having those things as part of the team identity.

Loved Tofolli. Gave gave a Damn and played hard every shift last season.

Also like the trade from Conroy. Gotta admit its a ballsy move trading an aging top scorer on the team for a guy you think is going to pop. Hope the gamble pays off
