I think because they think highly of Sharangovich and the draft pool in the 3rd round.

It isn't the worst return. But it feels like an attempt to tread water rather then maximize value. It feels like a GM trying to check to many boxes (get younger, bigger, and replace Toffoli production). It also feels like a bit of Feaster era wishful thinking.

This kind of nails it for me. Like most of Feaster's trades, the value just doesn't add up to me. It will be interesting to see Conroy's next transaction to see if it's a pattern.

I think another thing that plays into this trade is maybe Conroy just wanted to get one of the to-do items checked so he can concentrate on the bigger deals. 7 UFAs is a lot to deal with for an experienced GM, let alone a rookie one.
Maybe he thought it just wasn’t worth waiting till draft day to squeeze the 3rd round pick into a 2nd round pick when he needed to focus on a Hanifin deal and making draft selections and other moves. Things can get crazy hectic in draft day and if you can make things a bit easier it might be beneficial.
If he gets a 2nd instead of a 3rd, it looks way better but does it really change things in the long run? Also, the Devils don’t have a 1st so that 2nd is even more valuable to them. The draft is so deep that the 3rd might have the value of a 2nd compared to other years.

Don’t worry, used NJ in NHL 23 and our new #17 seems like a sneaky pick. He did take a bone head penalty in the game, par for the course for that number for us.

Meh. Won’t be able to truly judge this trade for probably 2-5 years so I steadfastly refuse to have an opinion mere hours after it occurred.

The only one in the top-12 in goals for the 2018 draft class who wasn't a first round pick. He's also 8th in points for his draft class and the only one in the top-13 who wasn't a first rounder.
It's funny, if they had made this trade with Carolina and got Kotkaniemi (drafted 138 spots ahead of Sharangovich) in return, people would have likely been happy about it. Sharangovich has played 114 fewer games than Kotkaniemi, but has scored 1 more goal and only 28 fewer points.

More correctly, he’s 14th among 2016 first time eligible draftees, 1 behind Dube and 2 ahead of Puljujarvi.
I mean when you look at it as Dube+3rd for Toffoli it’s not bad value. The decision making of why bring in more middle sixers instead of getting swings at top line talent is what was flawed. Sharangovich could pop though, look at Hagel this year. Betting against Flames pro scouting is one of the safest bets in the league though, so we’ll see if this is buying low or if NJD got tired of a decent young player for a reason.

It's interesting too that he was apparently a great penalty killer. Not everything is about points.
At this point, I am not worried about the team being worse in the short term. Sharangovich sounds like an asset that has a decent chance to increase in value, which would help in the future.
This one won't be able to be judged for a couple of years at least.

This is one where these charts are right. This trade is just the beginning of walking backward.

Still feel like it's not great asset management. Could have better maximized the value at the trade deadline.
