Not that the Panthers are relevant to the Flames but they won't be winning the presidents trophy this season IMO

I also think Ottawa, Detroit, Montreal and Buffalo will make for better competition this coming year. I don't see Florida or Toronto having the same success. Boston may fall off a bit too I think.

That is a great signing. Never a problem with potentially overpaying your studs by a couple hundred thousand.

Is it after next season that the cap can start going up again?

Not exactly. FLA had to make a choice with 2 pending UFAs they knew they couldn’t afford to keep in the near term. The cap will go up substantially but not for 2/3 years, which meant they couldn’t have kept them when they came due.
So they decided to go with cap certainty on a younger player. Roll of the dice on both sides but less so for the flames as tkachuk wasn’t going to sign anyway.

Sure I agree and understand it from their perspective that it isn’t just a 1 year thing
And I have no problem with the argument for next year JH may be better then MT either
I don’t think MT nor JH are superstars in these league - and that isn’t to knock them
A superstar to me can single handidly take over a game and carry the team on their shoulders . They are first ballot HoFers . Untradeables.
McKinnon, McDavid, Matthew’s, Makar, Hedman, Ovy, Crosby, Malkins - These are the superstars of the last 20 years (I know there’s more doing a quick list)
If JH does what he has done a few more seasons and has some playoff success he could enter the conversation as a later bloomer aka Marty St.L , he’s just not a superstar IMO yet

|
Overpaying any player contributes to cap hell. Lucic was once a player that could play top six, and got paid like it. When he became the 4th liner he was expected to be in his later years, that's when he became overpaid and an anchor to the team he played for. Monahan is a warning about long-term deals. Injuries can really side track a good contract and turn it into a nightmare of an albatross that follows the team around.

Sure, with a first line that featured three 40+ goal scorers and players who scored 115, 104, and 82 points respectively. Gone are two of those 40+ goal scorers and the two players who broke the 100 point barrier. The 115 point player has been replaced. Missing from that line is 50+ goals and a player with 100 point skill. That needs to be replaced which is why celebration may be a little premature.
Quote:
10.5M with a 120+M cap won't be that big of a deal, I suspect the guy can still play. Also, if you are never willing to pay a star just fold the franchise.
|
When is this $120M cap rolling around? The players still have a billion dollars in escrow to repay. That isn't being returned quickly. The CBA will expire before the potential for a $120M cap is likely to occur. Signing this deal with the expectation that revenues are and the cap going to grow by 43% is foolhardy. Spend to what you know you have not what you think you're going to get.

Yes he has. Now he just needs to sweeten that lemonade to make it worth buying. He'll do that by getting Weegar signed long-term and bringing in a winger to complete the top line. Lucic, Monahan, and Backlund may have to move on to allow this to happen. Treliving has completed step two of a multi-step plan B. We'll see what he does, but this will continue to be a rollercoaster off season I'm sure. So far, so good!

He has elite vision and hands. Those don’t degrade as fast as skating and shot power.
Adam Oates - another great passer - was still scoring over a point a game and leading the league in assists at age 39. Other elite playmakers have also aged well - Thornton put up a point a game at 36, and H Sedin had 73 points as a 35 year old.

Playmakers do seem to last longer into their 30s than grinders or pure goal scorers

Exactly, I think Florida underestimated how much Huberdeau meant to the team. I think there offense takes a hit this year. Tchakuk does offense better with an elite passer and vision guy.

Is there really any reason to think this will age worse than had the Flames signed Gaudreau? I get there is one more year because the deal doesn’t kick in until next summer but I was happy if the Flames went $11M on Gaudreau so totally fine with this deal.
The franchise and fanbase needed this after the rejection.
Pretty crazy how this summer has gone. We have a new franchise player

The Flames approached him this summer about signing his ELC but he declined and stated he wanted to play another year of NCAA.
Probably the right move for him.
They will go hard after him next summer though, and if he doesnt indicate a willingness to sign then, other options have to be considered.

Posted it earlier, Lindholm. When the Flames acquired him, one of the selling points about Lindy before the transaction were his zone entry stats which were IIRC, considered elite.
Flames just never utilized it though since he eas instantly slotted on Gaudreaus wing and everything ran through Johnny .
