Excited to see our breakouts this year sans the button hook. Maybe less drop passes too since that was a to Johnny thing.

Yowza. Loving the first four years. This will probably be ugly for the just four. This opens the window for the next four years though. Huberdeau is the real deal, and the Flames have all the cap space in the world
Inflation?

has he? or did he have a monster year playing with two other top end guys
Tkachuk had 43 points the previous season
you also keep saying this like Tkachuk was willing to stay, he wasn't...he wouldn't have stayed for 8x10.5 even

If the Flames can be frugal in the bottom six, it should be wash. As someone else mentioned, take Lucic and Monahan off the bottom 6 and replace them with salaries that represent their roles better, and the team doesn't skip a beat.
Disclaimer: This is not to be a knock on Monahan who obviously had career derailing injuries that diminished his role.
The main point is that a team should be able to subject themselves to this type of contract for a star player as long as they manage the risk down the payroll, which the Flames have not been doing, but get a clean slate when Huberdeau's extension kicks in.
Maybe we get lucky and Huberdeau ages well.

Will be nice to actually cheer for team Canada at the World Cup...it was looking like I was going to be pulling for USA but now they can EAD
Tkachuk/Gaudreau can get crushed and cry while Huberdeau skates around with that stupid trophy

I agree.
The Flames have a lot of cap space opening up next off season. If they add another talent and get growth from within they are legit contenders. If 1-2 of their top end prospects become 40-60 point guys plus they add another first line player, this team looks incredible.

He wasn't willing to stay. We all know that. Tkachuk proved he could play up and down the lineup. So has Huberdeau. Tkachuk will bring more intangibles the next 5 seasons than Huberdeau will.

Jesus christ...
Whatever Tkachuk will or won't do for the next 1, 2, 5, 10 seasons has absolutely ZERO relevance to any of this.
He was gone no matter what.
He requested a trade, he was not going to sign in Calgary. EVER.
This is not Treliving deciding to move on from Tkachuk.
This was Treliving having to react to Tkachuk telling him, and everyone else in the league that HE WAS NOT GOING TO STAY IN CALGARY.
lol
That Treliving took that BS situation and turned it into:
1. An top line winger and top 10 league wide scorer, now committed to CGY for 9 years
2. A top pairing defenseman from the Presidents trophy winning team last season
3. A pretty decenbt prospect
4. A future 1st round pick
Is nothing short of a goddamned miracle.
Blows me away that there are some Flames fans in here wringing their hands over this.
LMAO

I don't agree but still don't know how this is relevant anyway
1. Tkachuk wasn't staying
2. It wasn't a 1 for 1 deal
Personally I think Huberdeau is better than Tkachuk but that can be debated I guess.
Add Weegar, 1st, prospect, its laughable
Flames are so much better after this trade its frankly embarrassing to suggest otherwise

Out of thanks, but THIS.
I'm delighted with these moves, and this signing. Hope we get a few more before the season starts.

Just wait until they extend Weegar too.
Imagine telling someone a month ago that Treliving was going to trade Tkachuk for Huberdeau, Weegar, Schwindt and a 1st in the trade spec thread.
You'd have been laughed off the board.

You do realize they both broke out at practically the same times in their career, right? Tkachuk had his first PPG season in his 6th NHL season and Huberdeau had his in his 7th.
Since then he's scored 346 points in 286 games.
I don't see Matthew Tkachuck getting anywhere close to those numbers without someone like Johnny feeding him. Barkov is incredible and I'm sure he'll still get to the 90+ point plateau, but I can't see getting Chucky there consistently.
If Matty scores more than 80 points 2 times in the next 8 years I'll be shocked.

Also, so the Panthers put Tkachuk on their top line so he can score big numbers...okay about that second line.
Not that the Panthers are relevant to the Flames but they won't be winning the presidents trophy this season IMO

One of the best posts in this thread.
Why are we (some of us) upset over the contract -possibly- being bad a few years from now? Maybe it's still a fair deal? Maybe they traded him before that for a great haul? Maybe he's exceeding the contract?
The Flames have a good team and signed an elite player to a long term deal.
Sometimes it's okay to enjoy life for a few seconds without complaining and thinking the worst. This is fun.
