Just wait until Coronato signs and goes on Huberdeau's opposite wing.

This, to me, is an insane contract and a mistake that will really hurt the team in a few years. Wish I could say otherwise but my immediate reaction is overwhelmingly negative.
I'd have much preferred they beat the price Seattle gave for Bjorkstrand, even - obviously not the same tier of player but the cap space is just so much more valuable right now than anything else, and of all the high-earning player types, scoring wingers are the least valuable assets based on the transactions we've seen this summer. Even on that front, if you were going to allocate cap space to a scoring winger, the better bet would be to pay Mangiapane whatever it took to lock him up for 8 years than do this.
I wouldn't have given him 10 million per and I wouldn't have given a term over 6 years. Even 6x9.5 is a bit risky from where I sit. This deal is absurd.
Hope I'm wrong... and hope Weegar comes in for a more reasonable figure.

I'd be worried about a mediocre #4 d-man on any team not named Edmonton with mushy noodles for a brain getting paid 9.25 x 8.
Also that backup you just signed long term to be a starter.
You guys had a choice there.
Back to your perch, wretched gargoyle.

In everyone I just mean the Oilers.

The way I think about it is something like this.
There are two levels of assessing the management of the team.
1. Are they selecting the right strategy to execute
2. How well are they executing the strategy they have selected
We can debate #1. I would be in favor of a proper extended re-build to give the franchise a foundation of assets it needs to create a team that contend for an extended period of time.
However, I've accepted they didn't choose that strategy and thus at some point, to me, it makes sense to move to the second level question.
So then we debate how well they are executing the strategy they have chosen. That strategy is focused on trying to extend this team's contention window, and try to win now.
So then I evaluate the moves they make on that basis. Because if you evaluate the moves because you wish they were re-building, almost everything they do will feel like a failure because they didn't pick the strategy you would prefer.

... And also, if the general take is "well it's not as bad as the Darnell Nurse contract", which I've seen in here like five times, that's not a great sign.

No. We signed Johnny's replacement for the same money we offered Johnny. Except we got a player that is probably a better playmaker and is 5 inches taller and 40 pounds heavier.

Nobody cares what those guys will do when they're playing for the 2027-28 Houston Coyotes.

To me this screams that Treliving isn’t done either.
He’s trying to lock up the RFAs, Huberdeau, and probably Weegar to better understand our long term cap situation.
I have a feeling we see a couple more moves in the next week or so potentially.

Huberdeau will positively impact his team, and 'stir the drink' offensively.
Nurse will be lucky to break even on any given night.

If we offer 6 x 9.5m then Huberdeau’s agent would laugh at us, say that we insulted his client, and then sign a 75m/7 = 10.714m in free agency the following season.
Gotta pay to play. We just lost Gaudreau and Tkachuk. And, we found a player who is just as good if not better than Johnny that was willing to sign the same exact deal we offered Johnny to remain here.

No that take is “no one whose team signs Darnell Nurse to that contract should say anything about anyone else’s contracts”.

Absolutely. Its always one or the other on major decisions. Shes a love hate relationship. Or hate love relationship also. This isn't the worst signing in the world. He will be good, but has work to do to get to the next level.

Yep. Tre has to move defensemen for either a RHS forward or picks so the Flames don't lose them to waivers..

This is what it takes to sign a top player to a contract in Calgary (and probably any other Canadian city). Otherwise you are trading him for futures, rebuilding and hoping you don’t have to pay whoever you draft even more before they bolt like Tkachuk, and you are in the same cycle of no star players sticking forever.

I’m not too scared of waivers at the start of the season. Everyone has those guys already.
