...but yeah, entirely reasonable to think they may get that done.
If that happens, Anaheim's Rakell may be a good target as well:

“At the end of the day, there’s no guarantee I can get those three free agents back. I’m going to attempt to sign them, if it doesn’t happen, I just can’t let them walk out the door free.’’
Similarly, Calle Jarnkrok is a player who makes sense. I'd still have them in the order of:
1. Hertl
2. Jarnkrok
3. Rakell
I'd put Rakell ahead of Jarnkrok if it weren't for him being Lindholm's cousin and the fact that Jarnkrok can play centre and either wing.
This is the year to go for it, and I don't think the 3rd line is good enough to push the team over the top (yet), and I love the idea of getting Lucic and Dube together on the 4th line.

Rakell is a RHS RW. Oddly enough, I think we're full on the right side in a top 9 role.
I'd sooner go on the more cost-effective acquisition of a guy like Namestnikov or Johansson that can play the left side of 3rd line and won't cost a 1st.

Rakell plays both sides, no? Toffoli certainly has/does.
Jarnkrok plays on both sides and at centre.
I don't imagine Rakell or Jarnkrok would return a 1st.
I don't get the trade ideas focused on forwards especially given that media and a certain AGM said they are looking at depth D. Rakell and the like are not in the plans.
As for the blueline, I thought we had enough depth with Stone, Mackey and Val, but I just took a look at Tanev's career numbers. He doesn't seem to have many 82 game seasons under his belt. In 12 seasons, the most he has ever played is 70 games which makes sense the way he plays.
We are an injury away from having a C depth of Backlund, Monahan, Ruzicka, Richardson so I don't think we are sitting pretty at forward. But the Flames are likely targeting a D or C.
Caps tight though. Maybe they can move Dube in the transaction and get a bit of cap retained. Between that and the lack of a first round pick I think it's a bench warmer depth move or two at the deadline.
Maybe we make it work for one of the 3 to 4 million dollar D, but someone like Hagg or Kulak is more realistic.
Scheifele is a professional and when he's on can carry his line. I Personally think he needs a fresh start and Winnipeg needs to retool on the fly hard and fast or rebuild.
His Cap Hit is 6.125 for this season plus 2 more. 10 Team NTC.
Monahan, Dube/2nd/Valimaki, Zary
Johnny Lindholm Chucky
Magipane Scheifele Toffoli
Lucic/BlackAce Backlund Coleman
Random thought after tonight's OT. Supposing the sweetener cost to move Monahan's contract is too steep, what about moving Backlund and a sweetener for an upgrade at center? Maybe get a 2c that ability closer to a 1c than Backs.
I’m no advanced stats savant by any means, but hockey (or any sport for that matter) is made up of defence AND offence. So where’s his offensive WAR?
Are you trying to say we don’t want the likes of Ovechkin and Kane on the team?
Also, if there’s a cure for a players defensive shortcomings, it’s Darryl Sutter.
If the Flames trade for Schiefele and he greatly improves his 200ft game under Sutter's watch (far from a guarantee), that still leaves the Flames with 2 major problems. 1) Next year's cap situation, and 2) a bare cupboard and almost no futures to look forward to.
Which works out to about $3.4M full cap - Pike indicates this in a reply to the above.
This is without money going out of course.
I think they will go for a depth D and maybe another depth forward.
As I do not think they will be removing anyone from the roster as either they are important or have negative value we would be looking the following for D options:
Robert Hagg or Zdeno Chara on D for number 7/8 on D
If you get some salary retained on those you could get another forward, with salary retained as well, such as
Nick Paul or Jack Roslovic or maybe Calle Jarnkrok for depth in bottom 6
