No, and Toffoli's offense would be totally neutered on a line with those two players. Gross trade
If we trade with NYI I want Parise.

My big dream remains Tomas Hertl. If we look at the David Savard trade from last year, it's possible to acquire players for 25% of their salary cap. That's the "all in" move. That's the player that lets us build a dominant 3rd line - and having a 3rd line that can go out and drive play/dominate the opposition has proven in recent years to be a massive difference maker for the Championship winning teams.
https://twitter.com/user/status/1380990663991422977
With that in mind, and when we look at Ryan Pike's cap breakdown:
https://twitter.com/user/status/1499393551351746568
I present to you the 2022 Stanley Cup Champions:
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Backlund - Coleman
Dube - Hertl - Tofolli
Lucic - Monahan - Lewis
Hanifin - Andersson
Kylington - Tanev
Zadorov - Gudbranson
Markstrom
Vladar
and the trade for Hertl:
To SJ: 2023 1st round pick, 2022 2nd round pick (50% retained)
To CBJ: 2023 3rd round pick (additional 50% retention, so retaining a further 25% of the full cap-hit)
To CGY: Tomas Hertl at $1.406M

Current fourth line is Lewis-Richardson-Ritchie. Sutter likes, but doesn't trust Ruzicka and Dube to hold the line there on a permanent basis. Everything here screams Jarnkrok out of Seattle. That makes a line of Dube-Ruzicka-Jarnkrok or Lewis-Richardson-Jarnkrok depending on Sutters mood, and Jarnkrok can play any position and up and down the lineup effectively. If there is an injury over a long playoff run, he can literally slot in any forward position.
Count me in the camp that thinks Calgary does not need any more defensemen. If they are not getting someone better than the current top six, it's pointless. Stone and Mackey can slot in effectively today, and Valimaki and Welinski are the step down. There is plenty of depth. Even Kuznetsov and Kinvall arn't plugs.

I just don't see Hertl waiving for Calgary.

Why not?
Players want to win, and a long playoff run is probably the best thing to help him add some more money onto his next contract.
We've got Sutter. We've got Markstrom. We're a dominant team. It's also (potentially) only a 4 month commitment. If the Flames keep playing the way they're playing they are going to be a team that pending UFAs/rentals are going to want to come to.

Flames are a top 10 team in the league with legit Stanley cup aspirations and a history of treating their players well and being a great place to play hockey and live. I think the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Hertl may not want to go to CGY long term but he might be willing to spend a few months there on what looks like a legit cup contender right now.
Personally I hate high priced rentals, and after paying a premium to acquire him it would suck if we didn't win the cup and then watched him sign back with the sharks in the off season.
I'm still hoping there is fire behind the Scheifele smoke and that Tre can snap him up for Monahan plus futures. Not only would that solidify the C depth for this season, but it would mitigate the damage a little bit going forward if Gaudreau does indeed walk away. Very unlikely though I suppose.

Hertl is a beaut. Fans love him and he loves it down here. I think its posturing and he re-signs with SJ.

Yes, this would also be excellent.
...but I'd also like to see Monahan raise a Cup here.

I just think cup hunting is overrated as a factor in waiver of NTCs. When has that ever happened? Players know that any team - even good ones - has long odds. And some value other factors a lot more.

Jarnkrok would be my ideal depth F add, and acquisition cost should be palatable.

Absolutely no way would I give up the 2023 1st for a rental when we could be losing multiple top players from our team this summer.
The big move is over we got Toffoli. I think we are looking at depth moves and maybe a Dube swap with another young forward who needs a change of scenery.

Does seem like the perfect fit doesn't it?
Can play wing or centre, cheap, likely has Lindholm's stamp of approval, etc.
We worry about what happens if there is an injury to Backlund, Lindholm, etc. This is the guy.
I know other teams are interested, so it may be two 2nds or a 2nd and a prospect.

I question how palatable it would be. He's good and cheap and can play multiple roles. I expect many teams would be in on him.
Likely costs at least a 2nd round pick, and Seattle would trade him for that to the team they feel would have the worse record this year, and that's likely not the Flames.

I suppose but because the East has so many weak teams their top teams are all outpointing Calgary. Plus 2nd round and beyond the position differences aren't as magnified. It's going to be a back half of the round pick no matter what.

But they would still trade him whom they thought were the weakest of the teams wanting him. Hard to imagine that could be Calgary.
