As I see it, you could upgrade your actual starting 12 in the forward ranks with a relatively inexpensive acquisition.
IMO Stone is about as solid a #7 as you could expect so you're upgrading the 8th spot. Sutter did play some young D in Montador and Commodore through the 2004 playoffs. IDK if you trade for a Forbort just to have him sit 7 or 8 on the depth chart.
What's unique this year is that because of so few injuries, no one outside the top 6 is getting any NHL icetime. That could make the team nervous.

34 points in 52 games. Only 7 are goals.

You read it wrong. He has 30 pts in his last 39 playoff games. I was wrong about the 32, it’s 30.

Not sure if this the right thread but I have a trade deadline proposal:
Calgary gets Craig Anderson
Buffalo gets Dan Vladar
Anderson gets to play for the Flames, finally. Vladar gets more starts and can be the Sabres' #1 goalie moving forward. This also means that Anderson can retire after next season, leaving Dustin Wolf as the team's backup next year.

Wolf still will need another season in the AHL. No point letting him sit on a bench for two years behind Markstrom.
Vlader is the cheapest best back up available for a this team who needs every cent of cap space, that’s why Tre went out and got him.

I understand the sentiment but Vladar is a lot more valuable to the team as he’s been a part of the locker room from the start of the year, has performed quite well all things considered. He is also much younger and is still under team control at a low cap for one more year, that’s a golden ticket at trade deadline next year if the Flames feel Wolf is ready by that time, no need to rush him let him keep dominating this year into the playoffs where he can be the guy and try and do a run for the Calder cup and see how he starts and plays next year. At that point Vladar could be worth a top prospect or maybe a 1st if not a high 2nd or maybe a notable and established player on a good contract with runway.
The only way I’d trade Vladar is if it would be foolish not to, it would take a really good offer and he’s found money at this point.

Let’s use Monahan to sign Johnny.
“Hey Johnny, if you want 10+ we have to buy out Monahan, if you can agree to 8/9, then we can keep him”

Toigh tonsay, but an injury on the right, I could see Klingberg fitting nicely
Hanifin-Klingberg
Kyligfton-Tanev
or
Hanifin-Andersson
Kylington-Gudbranson
Zadorov-Klingberg

But why?
A 24 year old up and coming goalie for a 40 year old backup?
Vladar’s cap hit will only be 750k next year. That’s less than Wolf’s. Every dollar counts for a team as strapped as the Flames. Vladar will be the backup next year.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Why are we looking to trade Vladar, a young cost controlled goalie who they spent a pick on and will be leaned on down the stretch?
This thread really brings out the special.

There is a 0% chance Vladar isn’t the backup for the Flames next season.

So I see a depth move. Probably 1 depth dman and a depth forward. At most a guy that plays in the middle 6.
I'll take a guess and say: Justin Braun and Johan Larsson
|
he could still be right as Braun is in the top 10 on TSN's board

There's a chance we may be over-thinking the significance of this move. (referring to McNiven)

Nah!
Go big or go home… McNiven was the domino that allows for Monahan, Wolf, Zary and 2 firsts for Scheifele and his sweet, sweet contract.

Why would we do this exactly?

Yeah, does Calgary get picks or something? Calgary gets a 40 year old pure rental backup who's worse than the current backup. How about Tage Thompson and Vladar for Monahan, and Buffalo sends Anderson as to fill the backup spot

A few years ago I would have agreed enthusiastically. I’m not disagreeing now, but he’s only played 2 games at the start of the season this year, and averaged 20 games a year for the prior 3 years. It’s not a given that he is still the same player, and despite training there’s no way he can be in game shape. I just have lower expectations for any potential gameplay in the future when compared with what he brought in 2017-18 (the last time he played a whole season)
