Calgary4Life: I agree that finding a good RW is/will be very challenging, but if possible, I think it is a better way to spend the cap dollars than an expensive Dman.
I think Andersson had an off year and will be better. I think Hanifin might also take a step forward. I expect Tanev to be as good as last year, or at least close. If those things are true, they really only need a #3/4 guy ($3-4M hopefully) to round out the top 4. I also think Valimaki takes a step forward, and he, Stone and Kyllington are more than adequate for the 5 to 7 roles.
|
I share your optimism with Valimaki, and I am betting that halfway through the season he will start excelling as a #5, and we will start talking about him moving up.
Andersson is a big question mark for me. I question his mobility and his ability to process things quickly enough. He seems to get exposed. I hope that last year was a hiccup, and then he can continue to improve, but I do not have the confidence of him being able to do so with his skating issues and footspeed. Way too many guys beat him last season going wide, and it really bugged me how many times he could have touched the puck first and moved it, but was unwilling to absorb a hit and allowed the forward to grab a hold of the puck first. Once Sutter came in, he did that WAY less, but just an example of how I question his decision making at times.
Hanifin I don't think has the upside of a #1 offensive guy. Pairing him with Tanev will create a really strong defensive pairing (Hanifin took a GIANT step forward defensively last season!). I just don't know if I want a 'shut down' pairing to be a #1 pairing, especially on a team that seemed to really struggle generating anything from the defence. Without Giordano, that offence is going to be even more difficult to come by this year, and it looks like it will be firmly in the bottom 5 or so in the league.
How to fix it? I have no idea... but (to me) it seems like this team's biggest hole. I hope that Hanifin, Andersson and Valimaki take enough of a step forward, or that Sutter is able to do something with Kylington as he probably has the best offensive skill-set from the back-end. It just seems like a bit too much to hope for (especially with Kylington, who barely feels like an asset with any value to the Flames).
I guess we will see, but this lack of offence from the defence is my biggest worry this off-season.

The Hamilton acquisition was an unbelievable trade and great feeling. Coming off a 2nd round of the playoffs lead by Gaudreau and Monahan with Bennett looking so good as well. Hamilton added to the core had me believing this was going to be a quick and successful rebuild.
3 years later it didn’t look like this team was moving forward. Ferland had one year left and rumors he wanted a decent sized deal in the 5x5 range. Dougie was the first of our young core that would hit free agency in 3 years. Lindholm was 3 years younger than Ferland and Hanifin is 4 years younger than Dougie. The rebuild kind of reset and the team took off for a year and actually made the playoffs in consecutive years. Couldn’t win a round and sputtered out this year.
Time for another transformational offseason and I hope we are all pumped by the upcoming additions. Huge offseason ahead

Based on the highlight video he’s basically Sean Monahan. With a few more moves. But man does he look slow.

We can't possibly take on that kind of cap hit for a one dimensional player.

I can't speak for others, but personally I couldn't a fat flying #### who Treliving signs, drafts or trades for.
I just want the team to win something important for once. They haven't gotten past the 2nd round in 17 years and only past the 1st round once in 15 years.
Win something goddammit.

When he's a $1.75M cap hit. Multiply him by three and you're spending $5.25M on your fourth line. When you should really be spending closer to $3M and spending that additional $2.25M on top six forwards and top four d-men.

Is this a trade for the 4th line though? I wouldn't be surprised if he's riding shotgun on Backlund's line.
I see Ritchie as the regular 4th line RW.

Not gonna crap on that at all. I think it’s a very smart play. I also believe that Tkachuk isn’t as good as he thinks he is…not yet anyway. The return is good enough to offset what he could be down the road as well.

first, he is a 3rd liner (25 PPG career pace, and plays pretty big minutes), and 2nd, having 3 budget guys on the 4th line is pretty rare, and we saw what Simon and Leivo and Nordstrom brought us last year.

I agree with Cali
I would take that deal right away
It would take hoping STL really likes Tkachuk

Yeah, Backlund's right wing is probably where he plays. And his stats say 3rd liner.

This is terrible and you should feel terrible. Flames have accomplished nothing in the Tre era and nothing for 17 years. I've been patient, optimistic every new season. Rinse, repeat. Rinse again then go for another rinse. May as be waterboarding at this point.

Posted this exact suggestion two weeks ago, along with a second part including Washington, and got run over. Still like this deal. Makes us better now and in the future.

Not if Connor Zary has anything to say about it...
(If Zary makes the team, I bet he wears 47... but he's worn 18 for his entire junior career, including at the WJC).
