It's because Francis is in over his head and was asking the moon and the stars. His picks were atrocious and it looks like he had no real strategy. Vegas was great because they went in with a strategy, stocked up and dealt some of the players they picked for more picks. Just tell me that someone wouldn't have given you a 2nd or a 3rd for Jake Bean. You don't think some wouldn't have made a deal for Colin Miller or Nikita Zadorov? There are so many bad picks and missed opportunities. They could have cornered the market on goaltenders or defensemen and had a garage sale, recouping a ton of assets for the draft.

I love the shape of the 4th line.

Lucic-Pitlick-Ritchie

All a good size and can play physical. Exactly what this team needs and has been lacking in forever. The 4th line is supposed to bring energy to the team and those guys will.

Just need to acquire two top 9 forwards and a top 4 d-man and we are good to go.

So for the people calling for Treliving to make a bigger signing instead of wasting cap on depth forwards, who do you have in mind?

Here’s a link to the available UFAs:

https://www.spotrac.com/nhl/free-age...ufa/available/

Let’s hear some RW signing proposals.

I will happily move a 4th to secure the type of player you'd be overpaying for in free agency.

Fans of every team he's been on were hoping he'd make his way back to them. Many Coyotes fans have said outside of Chychrun and Garland, Pitlick was the only player who gave a damn out there on the ice last year.

This is like a hybrid of the Leivo and Nordstrom signings - excellent defensively but also has a touch of offense.

Treliving shouldn't sign any UFA forwards because he's absolutely awful at it.

Maybe instead of wasting picks and cap space on 3rd/4th liners, he could address the real issue that we all know is the problem and the area that will achieve actual results - scoring and the top 6.

IMO If he can't or won't make a trade to better this area of the team in the coming days he has no business running the team any longer.

I'm blown away that Perry made $6.625mil last year. I'd take Palmieri on a two year deal for similar dough as he was making before.

There are actually 12 forward positions a GM has to ensure are full every year, all of which require some cap space.

This includes the 3rd/4th line. Not sure if you were aware.

If Perry will sign for what he had last year as a Hab, Tre should learn his lesson and be done with it for another year!

I still remember how much Killer_Carlson hated Chris "Clunk" Clark.

That said he scored 10 goals no matter where they Flames played him, and when they were able to put him in as a 10th forward role and he scored 10 goals with Daryl Sutter coaching the team..that team was pretty good.

I seem to remember that he used to have one of the better ES goals per 60 numbers in the entire league when he was playing for the Oilers. Really it looks like his issue is health and being able to play more than 50 games in a season. If this guy can play 75 plus games, and chip in 10-12 goals and be a positive contributor it's not terrible. The 2022-4th round pick might show up by 2027.

The team isn't committed to rebuilding at this time, so what they hell, give up this balanced approach to team building and go hard one way or the other. Ottawa is proof that you can pretty much lose every trade, yet still accumulate a lot of young assets so long as you commit to a rebuild. Flames will not commit, so might as well do whatever you can to make your team better now.

I doubt he'll be buying Lucic a Rolex for that number here.

He wore 18 in Dallas and Philly. Depending on what other players the Flames acquire in the next week or two, he'll probably be wearing #18 next year.

Perry only made 750,000 with the Habs. The rest was probably buyout money from the Ducks.

So is it fair to say Treliving has in fact ran a draft pick deficit in terms of both quality and quantity and used that deficit to build a non-playoff roster?

I think it’s completely fair to question every time he moves a draft pick out for a depth piece considering how bad his track record is for those types of moves.

It does sound like he's an effective bottom 6 forward though, so that's good. Nothing wrong with improving your roster from top to bottom, but I sure hope something is coming to improve the roster at the top end too.
Serious question:

Who are the bottom 6 forwards the Flames have a lot of money tied up in?
The only one I really see is Lucic.

Forwards under salary:

Tkachuk: $7MM
Johnny: $6.75MM
Monahan: $6.375MM
Backlund: $5.325MM
Lucic: $5.25MM
Elias: $4.385MM
Mangiapane: $2.425MM
Pitlick: $1.75MM
Ritchie: $900K
Froese: $725K

I included Backlund as well assuming Lindholm plays at C and Monahan doesn't go anywhere.

Adjusted for the value of the picks it doesn't look much better for the Flames since 2012, when the Flames were supposed to have gone through a rebuild (from Dom at the Athletic):

I don't care about this trade that much but we at least should have the facts right, and the facts are that the Flames have leveraged the future for at least a decade now.
That chart is actually a massive indictment AGAINST acquiring extra picks.

Teams with the most: Buffalo, NJ, Edmonton, Detroit, Ottawa

Teams with the fewest: Pitt, Vegas, STL, Washington and Boston (TBL also below Calgary)

Moving forward Backlund as he gets into his 30’s

He’s always been a 2C/3C tweener but his play is trending down and at 31 it’s a fair bet for that to continue

A Lucic-Backlund-Pitlick third line for ~12.5M is pretty brutal cap allocation for what you get. Especially if we need to be beating more top heavy teams with our depth which seems to be the plan
