I think Hamilton is the odd man out simply because Carolina needs a top-six forward and they have too many RHD. Hamilton may be the best chance at bringing in the bacon on that front.
I don't think it's necessarily Dougie's fault; probably just circumstance in the business of hockey.

Athletic top 20 players that could be on the move. Craig Custance. Good write up for each player if you have a subscription. Comments right now it is definitely a buyers market which is great news for us.
1. Panarin
2. Duchene
3. Stone
4. Hayes
5. Hamilton
6. Simmonds
7. Krieder
8. Schenn
9. Muzzin
10. Nyquist
11. Puljujarvi
12. Liljegren
13. Ferland
14. Zuccarello
15. Niederieter
16. Howard
17. Burakavaky
18. Daley
19. Martinez
20. Jensen
A few players on that list would look good in Flames jersey’s

Puljujarvi - LOLOL. Funny to see both Ferland and Hamilton there.
The rest of the list is quite attractive, but the ask for most will be unreasonable, especially since most are UFAs. Exceptions: Kreider, Hamilton, Muzzin, Liljegren, Nino, Daley, Martinez. And of those, I'm only interested in a couple for the Flames.

Which makes the trade all the more special, considering we snagged Lindholm and Buffalo grabbed Skinner.
Carolina... doomed.
I'm really interested in hearing about this guy:

Simmonds has not been good in Philly this year. He is the Philly whipping boy right now and their fans constantly make comments about how they'll never get a 1st for him at the deadline.

I would not give up a 1st for Simmonds, and I assume that's the asking price.

Ignoring the cap implications, which make this idea a rather non-starter for Carolina, I doubt it would be plausible. It seems (to me), Treliving doesn't keep players that take him to arbitration. Most players that do it are moved at some point. Could be just a coincidence, of course.

Good. Means he will be super motivated as a rental in a contract year
And cheap

Carolina has the most cap space in the league. The floor is more of an issue for them.
Unless you mean salary implications

Maybe I just have selective memory, but I don't think any of us were saying Dougie was the "best defenseman in the NHL," and I didn't think anyone outside of the Flames thought that much of him either. Now the Leafs might acquire him after a very underwhelming first half, and he's suddenly a top 6 defenseman?
Toronto fans/media are crazy.

How did Puljujarvi get on a list of "top" anything that also doesn't include the word "bust". I don't discount that he could be traded but what team is on the phone right now saying we need to get him before the deadline? He will be part of a "my underachieving prospect for your underachieving prospect" or part of a bigger deal but seems totally misplaced on this list.

I think the Leafs should add Hamilton, but even if they got him without subtracting from their roster (highly unlikely) I still don’t think that even makes them the best team in their division.

On this topic of balking over trading a 1st - what about if it was a conditional 2nd that becomes a 1st if say, the Flames make the Conference Final? Is that worth it?
It looks like if we make the playoffs this year the Isles (from the complicated Hamonic trade) don't get our 2nd. Instead, why not trade it to them with the bonus possibility of it becoming a 1st? Kind of like the Russell trade.
