Ohhh, the advanced stats argument! Advanced stats are garbage. At best Tanev is a guy you can move up to your 3-4 spot as a defensive guy to compliment a highly offensive D man or he can be used in a 5-6 shutdown pairing. He is not a top pairing D man like Canuck fans make him out to be, he has little to none offensive abilities or awareness. He is a one trick pony. I would take Hamonic every time over him because he is a more rounded D man. As for Gio, Tanev might be better defensively but he is not remotely even close to the overall D man Gio is.
It's pretty evident he's not plan A, B, or even C for the Flames given their reported interest in Bishop, MAF, Raanta, Smith, etc. No guarantee the Flames are even interested in him so I wouldn't get my hopes up on the Mason being a Flame unless the draft goes by and they still have two roster openings at the position.
My post wasn't intended to mean that I specifically want Mason on the Flames.
I can't claim to be knowledgeable about all the goaltenders in the market right now, mostly due to my belief that typical goalie stats (GAA and SV%) are somewhat useless, but it appears that there are A LOT of options to choose from, definitely more so than last year.
I have complete faith in Treliving to find a way to secure the best option available, something I can't say was in place for previous regimes.

He does this at a rate high enough that it makes up for his lack of scoring, leading to his team still being a plus.
So if you have a defenseman, who you can match against a teams top line, and effectively slow them down for 20-25 minutes a night. That's not a 5th d man, that is a d man who is going to play as much as any teams top forward does.

It should be when you compare value to a team and contract, etc. Snow would be foolish to do a straight across swap.
Bennett and 2017 1st for MacKinnon
Backlund for Galchenyuk and 2017 2nd
2017 2nd (from MTL) for Raanta
CGY re-signs Johnson for 2 years
CGY re-signs Stone for 3 years
CGY re-signs Versteeg for 2 years
Vegas takes Brouwer
Let the insanity ensue. :P

My post wasn't pointed at you in particular. There seems to be a few fans here on the Mason bandwagon and really there's no indication the Flames have any interest and their actions show he's not high on their wish list. If they can't make a trade before or at the draft then they will have to look at if it's worth bringing back Elliott who will likely be better after a season in Calgary under his belt or bring in a guy like Mason who may also have growing pains adjusting to a new team. That's not even taking into account the salary and term these guys may be expecting in free agency. It certainly appears the Flames don't want to go the UFA route if possible to avoid having to lock up a guy that they don't really covet.

Hamonic IN
Eberle and Russell OUT
not sure the Oilers improve anyway...nothing to worry about IMO
Phillips to me seems like a hungrier, more aggressive player with incredible vision.
Mangiapane is no slouch either.
Where I'm coming from is that with Johnny already in the lineup, I can't see Mangiapane making the big club anytime soon just due to team size.
With Phillips, he's a few years out and his development is not likely to stall like Mangiapane's could due to no spots.
I think Mangiapane has a ton of value, it may be worth considering moving him while there is demand on that type of player at that point in his career without running the risk of said development plateau'ing.
But why do you think Phillips should be moved before Mangiapane if it ever came to it?
Phillips is listed at 5'6 141. Mangiapane at 5'10 185. Versteeg is 5'11 176. Mangiapane is basically the same size as Versteeg. Mangiapane could be close-ish to the NHL. Phillips is a lot of growing, strength adding, proving himself in pro away from making the NHL. Phillips is a longshot. Mangiapane looks like a much safer and better bet. Phillips basically has to be the next Gaudreau to make the NHL. That is nowhere near a sure thing.
