The current Johnny and Mony contracts reminds me of Kane's and Toew's contract after their ELC expired. Let's hope these guys don't ask for $10.5 M when they get their third contracts
Let's hope they do as will likely mean they are perennial all stars and multiple Stanley Cup winners.

For those worried about term, although 6 years doesn't sounds like a long time, here's a little perspective:
6 years ago:
Taylor Hall was the #1 pick, Calgary didn't have a first rounder thanks to the Jokinen trade (and Johnny wasn't even drafted yet).
Blackhawks won the 1st of their 3 recent cups.
Matt Tkachuk's father was still playing in the league.
Darryl Sutter was still the Flames GM.
The Atlanta Thrashers were still a team.
Seems far doesn't it?
I believe this was a time when the Tampa Bay Lightning signed Steven Stamkos to his last contract with the team before he'd use his UFA freedom to sign with his hometown Leafs or nearby Red Wings.

If he is a consistent 80-100 point guy, the Flames can pay him in 5 years. This gives them ample time to plan for that, plus offload all those bad contracts.
Toews & Kane didn't get max in their 3rd year in NHL either.
Now Gaudreau's next contract will have to be significantly overpaid, to make up for lost dollars here...
I don't know how big of a problem that will really be though, especially if he performs at the level we all think he might throughout this current contract. He could very well earn some make up value on his next one.
Player specifies 5 teams to which he can be traded. #Flames
Just as some quick food for thought, haven't some players in the past used their limited NTCs to really narrow down trade targets? For example, if someone were on the Flames and really wanted a trade to Boston, they'd name as their five teams:
- Vancouver
- Edmonton
- Anaheim
- Los Angeles
- Boston.
By doing that, they basically force a trade to Boston since the chances of trading within the division are much lower. Then again... that risks a trade to Edmonton...something no one in their right mind would do...

Nice contract for the Flames, I am surprised they got him under 7 Million. This gives the Flames the ability to be an elite team for hopefully the next 3-4 years minimum. 3 legitimate top 2 dmen locked down, 2 legitimate first line forwards and a couple legitimate 2nd liners in the fold. Plus a very good third line. If Tkachuk turns out to be a player the Flames should be competitive for a long time. Nice day to be a Flames fan.
