If they ever scratch the whole "forever a flame" fiasco, do they go back and retire those numbers?

I don't really care if they retire numbers or not, but can we please take Getzlaf down from our rafters?

The Hitmen use the rink same as the Flames and they have a right to retire their own players if they want.

Take it down and put it in storage for a few years. I hate seeing that too.

That's too bad. "Forever a Flame" is kind of lame to me. Unless it was used to honour a 2nd tier of Flames stars such as Pepper and Loob while reserving retirement for such legends as Lanny, Theo, Killer, Big Al and Iggy.

Maybe it's because you're old, but for a lot of younger fans he literally was the Flames for the better part of the nineties. Absolutely dominate in skill and singlehandedly put fans in the seats for years. He was one of the best players in the entire league during a large era of time that you completely omitted in your dismissal of his accomplishments.
In fact you literally only gave him credit for his rookie season in the NHL AND used it against him, calling him a bit player.
Yeah there was absolutely nothing dominating about Fleury in his prime. Clueless. And it always seems to be the older posters that have it out for Fleury and hammer him every chance they get like he was a rival star player or something.
|
Older poster here. I was in Junior High when Nilsson, Plett, Chouinard, MacMillan, Lever and the rest came over from Atlanta. Don't count me in on your generalizations, though. I have been a fan of Theo and his feisty, gung-ho style ever since the 1st time he was called up from Salt Lake. He had that "bring you out of your seat" quality right from the beginning.

He actually had a pretty decent camp that year. I had him pegged as at least a 3rd liner and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

While unlikely Kipper could conceivably still come out of retirement.
I think you need to give it a few years before putting it in the rafters.
Might be a fun ceremony to have in the new arena

The complaints about the "Forever a Flame" thing vs. "retirement" is nothing more than arguing semantics.
The only thing that bugs me about all this is that I wish they would convert Lanny and Vernon's banners to match.
|
It's more than semantics. If you doubt it check out the goon who was wearing FAF Nieuwendyk's #25 last year.

25 isn't retired. Nor should it be.
14 and 12 are. Neither will ever be worn again. The semantical argument is only about what you call the eventual banner ceremony.

Not sure if Vernon should have been retired, but at least 12 should be retired next to 9, and 34 is more deserving than 30.
Having Newie, Vernon, Mac, Connie & Regehr as forever a flame honorees would be fitting in my book.
|
I wouldn't mind 2 methods of honouring a player, but that's not what the Flames are doing now. Nobody gets their number retired any more. It's just all FAF now. Retirement for legends (HOF caliber players) and FAF for beloved fan faves who didn't quite get to that level would be fine with me.

Great! Let's ahead and retire Murzyn's #5, then!
Really, in today's NHL there are plenty of amazing players who will never win a Cup (Iggy?) and other not so amazing ones who do.

That being said, Iggy is 19th ALL-TIME on the goals list, and may catch Sakic for 15. Easily would have been 12th/13th if not for 2 lockouts. And his prime years were in the famous dead puck era. Also, he brought more than just goals to the table in his career. He is a legend of hockey, no doubt and should have his number retired. If KK decides to do the lesser forever a flame, well he will instantly be fired by ownership I think.
But for a guy like Regehr, I think Forever a Flame is very fitting, but he shouldn't have his number retired.
|
It's not 2 separate methods. One has replaced the other.

Some players don't quite merit having their number retired. What is wrong with honoring them in another way?
As far as particular players go, my opinion is Kipper is borderline retirement/forever a flame. Iggy is clear cut retire the number caliber.
|
Not a great comparison. Number 4 is retired in Montreal. They didn't hit "le gros Bill" with a cheesy "Forever a Hab" non-retirement.

Call it what you will. Put up whatever banner you want. Until someone wears one of those numbers again as a member of the Calgary Flames, they're effectively retired.
|
How about 25?

Nieuwendyk is a HOF. Vernon is not. How should 25 not be retired?

Then I would agree with the rest of the posters here. It's stupid.
If Iggy doesn't get retired and it's only a "forever a flame", then that would simply be a travesty.
