I just can't stand the Forever a Flame thing ...

9 retired and then 30, but not 2 or 25? That's just silly.

If I had to rank order of needing to be retired I'd have ...

9
2
12

as my need to be retired, and then the next tier

14
34
10
25
30

Can't for the life of me figure out how Vernon ended up ahead of MacInnis

According to some, justifiable politics.

It's not about what you do wearing the emblem that matters, it's how much ass you kiss when you're no longer with the team apparently.

MacInnis wanted to retire a St.Louis Blue, that probably disqualified him right there.

It will be an embarrassment if Iggy and Kipper don't get legitimate number retirements. Forever a Flame is a joke. Retire a number or don't. If you want to honour a player, and not retire a number, make a forever a flame area in the concourse.

He wasn't good enough, despite his "historical" (his words not mine) pre-season shootout goal.
Quoted just for the great point that there's no bigger fan of Fleury than Fleury himself. "Historical." LOL!

Loved the guy, he's the same height as me and showed everyone that small guys could still play in this league. But his continuous foot in mouth....

It seems like I'm the only one who likes having two methods of honoring a player. .

Not sure if Vernon should have been retired, but at least 12 should be retired next to 9, and 34 is more deserving than 30.

Having Newie, Vernon, Mac, Connie & Regehr as forever a flame honorees would be fitting in my book.

Honestly, Vernon legitimately and completely deserves the full retirement treatment. He was that good.

Default How long until Kiprusoff's jersey is retired?

Kinda funny that "Forever A Flame" appears to be a consolation prize for those who don't meet criteria like sticking around and making an ongoing impact in the community.. May be incorrect though.

Mkre I think about it, if anything the FaF program should actually be a special status that exceeds number retirement as a way of recognizing ongoing community involvement.

In its current incarnation the whole thing just feels second rate. We may as well change the name to "remember a flame ? ??" (Possibly a fourth question mark). a black oval over the players face with a big white question mark.. maybe one of the numbers visible on the jersey is replaced with a question mark too (sorry lanny :/).. actually instead of a banner, let's just do outlines of the players in a colouring book that comes with Happy Meals at the McDonald's that would be the only culinary experience available at our new arena BECAUsE NOTHING IS SACREd ANYMORE

Really though if iginla isn't retired I'll be pissed

For Guy Chouinard it would be a nice Forever a Flame honor.

I like it. It's cool to have two separate methods of honoring Flames.

That being said, Iggy is 19th ALL-TIME on the goals list, and may catch Sakic for 15. Easily would have been 12th/13th if not for 2 lockouts. And his prime years were in the famous dead puck era. Also, he brought more than just goals to the table in his career. He is a legend of hockey, no doubt and should have his number retired. If KK decides to do the lesser forever a flame, well he will instantly be fired by ownership I think.

But for a guy like Regehr, I think Forever a Flame is very fitting, but he shouldn't have his number retired.

Not a fan of KKings forever a Flame program.
Its bush league that he tried to quantify it to the Leafs player honor program.
They have what 70 years more of history.
The Forever a Flame is a complete cop out.
I have said it before the Flames ownership and KKing have some weird hang up about honoring/retiring past players. It has nothing to do with player numbers either.
As for Kipper they will never retire Kippers number and they will give him a Forever a Flame when he is old and the kids have to be reminded how great he was because the Flames have become notorious for harboring grudges and ohhh God forbid Kipper didn't allow them to trade him and then he retired and went off the grid.
So for that the ownership and KKing will snub him for as long as they want. Just like other Flames greats continue to be snubbed.

I think you are a little off base man. There is nothing weird about honoring past players and greats. I think its excellent how some of the oldest clubs in the league honor the greats of old. Did you think it was too much to have "4" painted on the ice all year long, as well as having the players have a black 4 on their sweaters and helmets in Montreal? I thought it was extremely classy.

Some players don't quite merit having their number retired. What is wrong with honoring them in another way?

As far as particular players go, my opinion is Kipper is borderline retirement/forever a flame. Iggy is clear cut retire the number caliber.

I agree with this. What difference does it make if they are honored in one way or another. I see people mentioning Regher/Roberts etc., because they are who the current fans remember, but what about guys like Chouinard, Lysiak, Plett etc., who contributed as much to the franchise as many of the '80s and '90s guys did.

Frankly, I don't think there is any coincidence that the FaF program was inaugurated with MacInnis. And that likely came from the player's side rather than the team's.

Your pretty much preaching to the choir with me here. If you knew my stance on past greats i don't think the Flames do enough of that period.
I think it is vital that they like any other team embrace and celebrate their past. I am a huge advocate for players having their night.
This crap of them not retiring numbers that are without question worthy is my biggest issue. Those players earned a jersey retirement.
9, 30, 2, 14, , 25, 12 should be retired period. 34 if it was retired i would said good Kipper deserved this and the fans deserve seeing 34 in the rafters.
If that doesn't happen he should at "min" be honored.
I would also like to see Lanny in addition have a special night say on 30th or 40th year of his jersey retirement anniversary a Lanny #9 night.
The Flames do not pay enough attention to the past greats enough and i scratch my head as to why. Just like i am at loss for words as why did 30 get retired before 2 and 2 isn't retired like it should have rightfully have been.
To me this forever a Flame should be a ceremony for guys like Gelinas, Conroy, Hunter, Otto, Peplinski. Guys that are really important to Flames history but not jersey retirement worthy.
10 & 14 should be retired & nothing less.

No one has worn #2 since MacInnis retired. No one has worn #9 or #30 since Lanny and Vernon retired. No one has worn #14 since Theo. No one has worn #12 or #34 since Iggy and Kipper.

Call it what you will. Put up whatever banner you want. Until someone wears one of those numbers again as a member of the Calgary Flames, they're effectively retired.

Not true...
Jamie Allison, Brad Werenka and Mike Commodore all wore #2 post-MacInnis.

And Dwayne Roloson wore #30 post-Vernon.

Niewendyk's 25 is being worn by Bollig.
KKing said something to the effect of that only players that are of great calibre would wear a honored number. That they wouldn't be issued to just any player.
If so then wtf Flames, Bollig.
They think the fans don't pay attention to these details
