Wasn't Maloney Treliving's mentor? If so, I like the skills BT would have picked up. Maloney and the Yotes are doing well with the trades and draft pick acquisitions.

Don't they make big mistakes like this every year?

As sureloss alluded to, I think Darcy Regier has a big hand in how things are going too. Dude STACKED.... I mean STACKED Buffalo full to the brim with picks and prospect when they decided to rebuild.

having a run while Lundquivst is still in his prime, while St. Louis is still rocking, with Nash having a resurgence. Makes as good a sense as anyone else in the east.

But they draw the line in that they will not pay players to not play hockey for them.
They exceedingly rarely buy players out, they don't bury big contracts in the minors or overseas, and they don't retain salary on trades.
The only recent exception I can think of is Shane-o-Rama, and that was a very small contract, for a depth defenceman, who was playing in the AHL.
I think it's just a general policy of the Flames that they will give the manager whatever he needs, and they will spend to the cap every year. But they draw the line at throwing away money to cover up the managers mistakes, ala the Rangers.
I think it's a great way to run things, to be honest.

Interesting speculation, but I'm not sure the results back up the last line there.

I don't know, given the payroll constraints and unstable ownership, I think he's done ok, not amazing but definitely above average given what he inherited and what's gone on since he's arrived. That would be one of the hardest teams to manage in the NHL. The Oilers would do well to try and poach someone like him.

i thought rangers d was maybe the best in the league, or at least in the conversation, then they go and add yandle, who's offensively, a great dman....
I hate the rangers, but i suppose strike when the iron's hot. this may be a wide open eastern conference in the playoffs, as other than maybe tampa, there aren't many "elite" teams. any team that makes it could do some damage, and that's why sather is taking it as the opportunity to go all in.

Yup. Not that I've watched East that much, but the Rangers looked like a top contender to me, even before this trade. Yandles bargain contract should help them build a contender next year too.
Plus of course NYR has a great chance to re-sign him for more years.

Really hoping the coyotes don't get McDavid. Would hate to have to consider them a divisional rival.

Probably the best 3 lines of D in the league now with Yandle.
Top to bottom solid.
Great deal for both teams, they both benefit.

There is no question that it makes sense for the Rangers to go all in, considering they have Nash, St Louis and Lundqvist at a time when the east is ripe for the picking.
But I still think they overpaid. Hell, a 1st and a 2nd would be a good offer. Adding Duclair is crazy.

WTF are you talking about now?
2 things..
Im not on twitter or TV with how ever many of thousands of followers.
All I said was that I know Treliving has been talking with Philly....everything else as to who was involved was purely speculation on my part and i made that very clear.
Going to twitter with a statement of fact as he did is in NO WAY anything close to what I did.
So spare me the whole "oh please" crap and just ignore me if it offends you so greatly.

The 2016 first-round pick NYR sent to ARI is lottery-protected, so if the team misses the playoffs they can elect to slide it a year

I think this is a great deal for NYR getting Yandle at $2.62M AAV for 2 playoff runs.
The 1st next year is protected so it's a late pick. Duclair, although a good prospect, had a great WJC, but haven't really teared up the Q since being sent back - not like what he did last year.
Moore is more of a depth D now and haven't really carved out to be anything special.
The 2nd rounder will be near the 3rd round this year as well.
All that for a 40-50 pt Dman @ $2.62M for 2 years. Sekera got a first this year and a good defensive prospect for the rest of this year. So Yandle only got an extra second and a young depth D more.

I consider Sather to be a really shrewd trader in most cases. He's a great GM from July 2-June 30.
I can't believe he got rid of the Scott Gomez contract and got Ryan McDonagh in the same trade....

Yeah Sather is good at making trades but terrible when it comes to handing out contracts. The Gomez and Holik contracts are two of the worst in NHL history, not to mention Redden.
If someone locked him in a room on July 1st, Sather would be one of the best GMs in the league.

Well Edmonton will need some lottery luck to Win McDavid now. Arizona might not win another game this year.

Really? I'd say that the Coyotes have been horribly mismanaged this season.
-They are paying Ribero 1.9 million to play (and play very well) for the Predators. And will do so until 2020. 10.5 million total buy out.
-They will pay Yandle about 3 million to play for the Rangers for 2 playoff runs.
-They are still paying Runblads buy out. Only 200k left though.
-They couldn't afford to re sign their leading goal scorer, Vrbata. Those buy outs above are roughly what Vrbata makes.
-Dubynk had 9 wins and was their best goalie this year. They traded him for a 3rd and put the Wild back into contention. Thanks Maloney.
- They only have one true blue chip prospect. Domi.
Ya, they got a lot of picks. But it's kind of like listening to Feaster pat himself on the back for drafting Stamkos. They got those picks by building a joke of a team. If I was a Coyotes fan, I would not be happy at all.
