Holy crap. I'm having a hard time tempering my excitement with this kid, as we all our. You just can't deny that every single level of hockey he plays - he does this.
I've been burned by so many promising Flames prospects over the years, so I still have a very cynical part of my brain trying to keep me from getting too excited. Trying but failing! I can't wait to buy his Flames jersey. I could even learn to love the number 53... but 13 would suit me better.
The kid reminds me so much of Paul Kariya! That first assist from behind the net is textbook Kariya from the 90's. Very exciting to be a Flames fan right now.
Yes, the pass went right between the defender's skates. Use gif-explode to view the gif frame by frame. Here is the smoking gun:
Oh no! This is what I was afraid of! The Dark Prince is surely coming for us!

That pass was really a once in a lifetime type thing. That type of thing isn't happening again. Barely squeaks through the legs, barely makes it past the goal frame, Abdelkader in absolute perfect position swooping through at the perfect time, perfect re-direct shot to the perfect spot in the net.
Ahh fatso, you're so fat!!!
Get to work! Don't make me report you to management!

I ALWAYS wished Paul Kariya was a Flame. Never once did I think of how small he was or that he wasn't physical enough. He was an offensive juggernaut & those other factors didn't matter. I'm really hoping Johnny Hockey lives up to the promise. No reason he can't!
I'm a slightly above casual Flames fan who just happened to open this thread wanting to find out all the hype behind this Johnny Gaudreau guy.
I'd like to learn more of our prospects and understand if we're able to hold on to them. I've appreciated everyone who's answered my questions on CP and I'm glad this forum wasn't chalk full of pretentious dicks like you
BBQ, we have been discussing this for years man. We had a thread addressed to his mother for crying out loud. Forgive me for thinking it's safe to assume that most fans on this site have heard of Gaudreau and know that he was drafted at 5'6.
I believe you - you're obviously new here since you don't think this forum is full of pretentious dicks like me.

Yup. Loved Paul Kariya as a child, was the reason I was a big Ducks fan in my youth. Styles are very similar.

Me too! Kariya was my favourite player growing up and I always wished he would some how end up a Flame. I think the closest it could have came is when Selanne was a free agent after the lockout before he signed back with the Ducks. I remember hearing that Calgary was interested in him and he was interested in coming back to Canada. Not sure how accurate that story is but if that did happen and Selanne found a fit here maybe Paul would have followed? Not really a Sutter player but who knows...
As for Johnny Hockey I have no reason not to think this kid will light it up. He continues to impress at whatever level he plays at. If we protect him and give him open ice he will be just fine. I really hope we get to see him on the PP next year!
Watching him play his first game VS Vancouver all I could think about is how much he looked like Kariya out there. I figured it was the "Kariya Fan" in me trying to make the comparison but after seeing that pass... the kid has the same vision and agility as 94-98 Kariya. I know a lot of people don't want to over hype the kid but I for one love having a player with this potential finally apart of this organization again! It is hard not to get this excited!
It took me at least 10 loops to attempt comprehend what happened here:
1. Peels the pass off the wall with his skate.
2. Looks like he whiffs with his stick while turning, so goes skate-to-stick (with the same skate he just used in part 1!).
3. Spins back around to avoid the defender and head behind the net.
4. Banks a pass to himself off the back of the net while turning back around, heading to the corner.
5. Nobody open so once again spins to head back behind the net.
To reiterate: Skate-spin-skate-stick-spin-net-spin-stick-spin. Defender get zero contact with the puck, zero body contact with Johnny, and 2 love taps on his shin pads. If Johnny truly is a good human, he'll use some of his ELC bonus money to pay for #91's intensive psychotherapy.

There are so many impressive things about Gaudreau, and a number of amazing things about this play here. But maybe what I am most impressed by is that this is not a hockey practice; it's not a shinny game, or an all-star promotion. This is a 20-year old who has burned less than two months on his entry level NHL contract, playing in his first high-level international tournament dominated by a global cast of seasoned professional hockey players, who is attempting and finishing ridiculous behind the back and through the opposing defenseman's feet for a goal kind of plays.
...who does that?

When you consider that was for North American skaters only, Central Scouting basically expected Gaudreau to go undrafted once you add in Europeans and goalies.

Mikael Granlund in 2011 is the last prospect to have a similar tournament.

I took a vine of the initial move on that first Gaudreau assist where some people still can't figure out what happened if you want a different take on it.
