The deflections seem to play big part when comes to Johnny, clearly it is something he finds cool and likes to use. Examples like this goal, and a cool of the back of net pass to himself, remind me of someone else.

Not Weisbrod. He was sitting at the Bruins table at that draft.

Whichever USHL scout it was who convinced Button and Feaster to make the pick definitely deserves a nice bonus.

All the Feaster haters blame him for all the bad, so he should get credit for all that's good.

The thing that I love about this rebuild is the rapid influx of talent the Flames are getting. Johnny is essentially a high first round talent for a 4th round fricken pick. Add him to Monahan, Poirier, Klimchuk, Sven and the first rounder from this year. That is essentially 6 first rounders pushing to make the quad from when the rebuild started last year. That doesn't even include 2nd rounders that are pressing.

Just goes to show you how much hitting a home run with the 4th pick can help expedite a rebuild. I am also trying to temper my expectations, but he really is making a damn good case that he has the potential to be a top 6 forward.

Ah, right.

With that said though, does a self professed 'non-hockey guy', really have much of a say in who we are picking in the 4th round? This is all Button IMO.

Feaster had to give him an ok, considering how small Johnny is.
Would Sutter said yes?

GM still has final say. Gotta give him credit for having the smarts to listen to his scouting staff on this one, if that was the case.

Thanks Jay!
That entire 2011 draft has a good chance of being the best Calgary's had since 1984.

Gaudreau (ranked 193rd): http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=68892

He was listed as 5'6", 137 by Central Scouting.

He's like a wizard. Mcgrattan should teach Wolf his ways so we have someone protecting Johnny for years. We don't even need 3 point producers on Johnny's line, a decent centre to tap in Johnny's passes and an enforcer to prolong Johnny's career. His height doesn't matter at this point it's obvious we have one of the most talented prospects in the game.

It is so tough not to be super excited for JG and although I so desperately want him to be the next one. I want Johnny's play to dictate where he plays. If it is on the farm next year so be it, or if it is first line with Monahan/Backlund so be it. It is evident though it takes him a few games to become comfortable in an environment and then look out.
You'll get no argument from me there, FH. I just get tired of the "he's too small to make it" song and dance. The Hawks' website list Patrick Kane as 5' 11" but if you've ever seen pictures of him standing beside 6' 2" Jonathan Towes, you'll notice that he's clearly more than 3 inches shorter than Toews. So what!. It's the drive and talent that counts. Johnny will, however, need increased leg strength because he'll face more obstruction once the league catches on to the gem the Flames have.

I'm a slightly above casual Flames fan who just happened to open this thread wanting to find out all the hype behind this Johnny Gaudreau guy.

I'd like to learn more of our prospects and understand if we're able to hold on to them. I've appreciated everyone who's answered my questions on CP and I'm glad this forum wasn't chalk full of pretentious dicks like you

Gained 2 inches in height and 22 pounds since being drafted.

For me, that's what reduces a lot of the concerns about his size. He's not a guy who grew up average size and then stopped growing at 14 while all the other kids added another 4-6 inches. He has always been the smallest player on the ice, so he has always had to take care of himself against much bigger players.

To be fair, a lot of us have heard the same thing about Gaudreau for years and years and have exhausted ourselves debating this very thing to no end. Its not you, its the topic, we're all pretty tired of the height debate.

Its probably why he plays the way he does, had to develop the brain pathways that help him think fast enough to overcome his size disadvantage. It looks like he is thinking twice as fast as everyone else. I was one of the most if not the most skeptic about Johnny thinking players like that can't make it in todays game but I completely changed on that. I agree he turned being small his whole life into an advantage, we see him doing things that are far beyond the average work hard grind it out play a decent shift average player.

some of us haven't heard of this guy and when there's a thread dedicated to watching him specifically in the Worlds, it's going to attract attention from people who aren't as focused on the Flames prospects

Don't want to get into the discussion for the millionth time? don't engage.

No need to be snarky

Are you telling me that Johnny is a new, higher evolved, species of human?
