Not to mention most other markets besides the US where consoles sell have much higher broadband penetration.

I still can't honestly believe how awful internet is in some parts of the US. It's horrifying.

Some solid numbers coming out of the global Xbox One launch last month:
  • 2 Million Consoles sold through in 13-markets in the first 18-days
So now do they get to say 2 million/13 countries > 2 million/32 countries?

Doesn't matter. Strong starts for both consoles which is good to see.

Xbox One seems to be on a huge advertising blitz right now for the holidays down here. A nationally advertised McDonald's campaign, lots of ads revolving around the "record that" "got to this channel", "skype" and "snap" features. Embarassingly, I actually used the "record that" command when I scored an awesome goal in Fifa the other night. Never used it before, never really planned on using it, and thought it was silly but somehow I just blurted it out. It records at reduced quality for the clip which is probably a bit disappointing for those that do use it regularly.

The Skype app is superb. It follows you around the room and auto zooms in and out as needed. Wife likes the Fitness app as it does help form. So far pretty darn satisfied with it. Still have 6 games to complete on the 360 and PS3 though....

And they would not be the target demographic for an XBox One or a PS4 so really it is a moot point in this situation.

The demographic that is playing these games is the most likely demographic to be swayed by Streaming services.

It's important to understand that 98% of Americans CAN have high speed internet access, but don't. There are several reasons for this, it's people who are not tech savvy and can't even use a computer. Another reason is some simply can't afford it. But as mentioned, this is a group that will never buy a console anyway.

I know being abrasive is probably your nature so I won't take offense but I simply don't think streaming is going to replace cable any time soon and I'm probably right. One day we will all be driving electric cars but gasoline engines aren't going anywhere anytime soon just like cable.

There was another deal for the WiiU Zelda bundle again today for $210 at Indigo/Chapters online.

I'm normally a big Nintendo fan but whenever I try to rationalize out the purchase of a WiiU based on what games there are and what I might buy, always feel like I come to the conclusion that I need to see more before I decide to jump in.

Although by the time Mario Kart 8, Zelda U and Smash Bros come out, it would be a much easier decision. Only wish that Smash Bros wasn't a separate thing between the WiiU and 3DS.

Whats soon? Streaming outside of live sports is a parralel option to cable already. You can stream almost all the TV series the day after they air. You still need to purchase "cable" right now but it is all streamed. Movies are streamed or purchased.

So within 10 years everything except live sports will be streamed through some kind of platform.

Movies are streamed but that's more the shift from a corner store DVD rental retailer to streaming through an online retailer. That has had little effect on cable and while streaming is changing the landscape it's still not up to the quality or reliability of cable and I think you are dead wrong about 10 years as it's simply going to take longer.

While we are on the movie topic, I'll bump my question from last page.

Any takers?

It works the exact same as if you bought a movie on Apple TV. You have the option of buying in SD or HD usually, but for pre-releases I think it is HD only. I do not believe it is as high of quality as Blu-Ray, but it would be hard pressed to notice the difference unless you are running an amazing setup.

If you buy it, it will stay linked to your account for use down the road. Only one I'm not sure about is if you download or not. For rentals it is just a stream.

I don't think it's being abrasive to point out that your premise is invalid because it has already been shown in a very similar case to not hold true. Back in the 70s, cable penetration was only in the large cities, and far more expensive than OTA. Yet by the early 80s, cable was king. Now you have a cheaper and better technology with far better potential penetration into the market, and you think it's not going to prevail over cable?

The only thing stopping people from switching now, en masse, is that cable is easy to use and that the PVR allows you to time-shift so that it's a kind of ersatz on-demand service, plus content providers have a huge vested interest in the status quo and are reluctant to do anything to annoy their main customers, the cable companies. But it's already viable to switch - I am lazy as all heck, but I've considered dumping cable entirely and just going thru the hassle of getting a US IP for Centre Ice to watch the Flames, and torrenting the 2 shows I actually watch (Game of Thrones, Walking Dead); the only thing really stopping me is that I WANT to pay for the content, but currently I can't and I don't like the idea of leeching something that has real value.

In the specific case of the Xbone, I think Microsoft is entirely correct in positioning their machine as they have because the non-tech savvy user will like having a simple, preconfigured portal that will allow her to access all kinds of content, and considering that the hardware requirements of such a portal are much less than that of a dedicated gaming machine, they are even setting themselves up for keeping their machine relevant for years and years past its usefulness as a strictly video gaming console.

another thing to remember is that these things are basically computers...so much can be done these days with software updates. Xbox 360 and PS3 were bare bones at the start but new features were added all the time so there are likely lots of new features on both systems coming down the road

To be honest, if it wasn't for wanting a non-streamed NHL centerice I likely wouldn't have dish network. It would be hulu, netflix and streaming shows from the major network websites.

NPD (United States only) numbers are "out" this evening. Information starting to trickle out.

https://twitter.com/majornelson/stat...70948663201792

November NPD’s: #XboxOne was the fastest selling console in NA last month - averaging 101k units sold per day

But Sony says they are #1?

https://twitter.com/geoffkeighley/st...65992875323392

Sony has just said that PS4 was the top selling next-gen platform in November for "both hardware and software" per NPD.
