I think we need to use that term. Those that clamour for an Edmonton style rebuild need constant reminders of how bad the young gun era was - highted by very little proven talent and counting on several players each year to "take the next step".

I think the Oilers are starting to make a run for it now. Their streak is what L5 now? I think we have to watch out for them as they could come out of nowhere for the top pick again.

Were the above statements made by Oiler fans to Flames fans circa 2009, or Flames fans to Canucks fans this year?
Yeah, I can't tell either.

Seriously? Flames fans have been saying this for about six weeks now. Oilers fans have been saying this for six YEARS now. See the difference, or do you just enjoy developing false equivalencies to shame our fan base for being excited about a change in direction by the club that you obviously don't agree with?

I've seen a few good posts from you, but not this one. What is the point you're trying to make?
I knew a couple years ago, when I was mocking the Oilers, that Calgary was not immune from their present fate. I knew. Didn't change things one bit, nor does it now. They deserve to be mocked, as does Vancouver, if only due to the fact both teams are our biggest rivals.
In my style of cheering for the Flames, I will never stop hating the Oilers and Canucks. No matter where Calgary is in the standings, no matter which direction they're trending.

Can you name me a worse fan base in professional sports other than D-baggery Vancouver Canucks fans?
Yeah, I can't think of any either.

I would say the window isn't closed yet, Canucks could still win it this year. But after that it starts to look dicey.

The point is quite simple: look in the mirror and realize that you have become what you most despise. You guys sound exactly like Oiler fans. Is that really who you want to be during this re-building phase? Doesn't it make you feel a little... unclean?
Given the fact that the mocking phrase "building something special" might be the most frequently-used quote on this forum, the irony is palpable and delicious.

Don't worry about the Canucks cap issues, we have a capologist whose a genius at making everyone fit under the cap.
If we cant keep everyone, we'll simply buyout Booth and Ballard plus Luongo gone next summer = 15m of cap space freed up.
Also Alberts 1.2m will be gone, Derek Roy 5m that give us 21m.
The Canucks have no cap issues.
|
"whose a genius" Come on now.
If 7uongo wasn't traded this year, there is no chance he's bought out during this off season. Vancouver was adamant they get a good return, not just trading him for the sake of trading him. I doubt the owners would want to pay $27M in cash to 7uongo just to save cap space in an amnesty buyout. If they wanted to just save the cap space, they would have traded him a couple of weeks ago for players with expiring contracts.
Besides the ages being wrong, you thinking there are three amnesty buyouts, you not realizing the cap is going down next year, and your terrible English, the rest was well done.

The biggest knock against this team since the lockout has always been the same thing - not a lack of skill, or a 1st line center, or enough defence, or enough offence, or enough grit... It has been a continuous lack of consistent play where they show up every night.
There are definitely some guys on this team that aren't. I don't care how much I like them, or how important they are - if they don't start putting in CONSISTENT EFFORTS in, ship them out. This team needs to eradicate that one major flaw.
Backlund is going to be a good piece for the Flames. Reinhart - not bad for his 3rd NHL game. Kid is going to make some big mistakes out there, but he does good work as well. I bet he stays on the team next season. Sven will get it together. Too much movement between the NHL/AHL and also the injuries. Hope he gets a good off-season in and just builds from there. These games will be great for him. Brodie is good. Simple as that. Kid has surpassed anyone's (but the most crazy) expectations here. Who knows where his ceiling really is? Pure speculation until he is around 27 or so. Top 4 definitely this year, and fairly reliable at that.
I was hoping that Cammy would have been gone at the deadline, but I am actually glad he is sticking around. I think it is a toss-up to whom is providing more leadership out there - him or Giordano.
Glencross is too sulky for my taste - but the really nice thing with his game is that he slots in well from the 1st line through to the 4th, and is a good PK'er. Flames will be able to use him next season to help shelter their kids, as well as Stajan and Stempniak (both of which have exceeded expectations not only offensively, but defensively as well).
Canucks aren't going to nosedive just yet. They still have a couple more competitive seasons left in them. I think the biggest question mark revolves around Kesler. Can he be that strong 2-way presence any longer and stay healthy? Sedins.. what do you do with them when they start sliding? Tough to try and make a 'deadline deal' when that time comes for a team adding 2 highly-priced vets. Pittsburgh was an aberration in that department this year.
Canucks are no longer a favorite though, and that is a fact. Going to be tougher for them with realignment next season for sure.
|
Agreed on both accounts.
Backlund - I love his attitude; I love how much he hates the Canucks, and you can really tell the way he plays against them. Flames who hate Canucks/Oilers bleed the Flaming C and will be here a long time (or at least until 2014, amirite WhereRUOSullivan?)
Cammalleri I wanted to see him dealt for assets, but he seems to have put the onus on himself more to step up his game now that Iginla is gone and is taking responsibility to be better. Tanguay, while I love his skill and vision, is just forgettable. I bet he asks for a trade this off-season, again.
Also we need some team toughness. Seriously embarassing and frustrating to see Kevin Bieksa running around cheap shotting our guys. Thanks for making this team the softest Calgary Flames team I've ever seen, Jay Feaster.

I think you are missing a lot of "some of"'s before those "you guys."
I would say it is likely a minority saying those types of comments and hard to say if there is or isn't a correlation between the folks saying what you are claiming and that were making fun of the Oilers.

I hate how the Canucks are always laughing on the bench when they play us. They have zero respect for the Flames. If we can't beat them, we should at least be wiping those smiles off their faces. Take a pound of flesh.

If anyone ever needed a package deal the Bruins should have shut up and taken Tanguay and Iginla to help their crappy assed powerplay.
The Preston/Lowry pp is better than the Bruin pp.

I sure heard a lot of it coming out of the rink and on the train last night - and I got to participate as an observer as I went to the game after work and wasn't wearing a jersey.
Perhaps these people are the minority and are simply the loudest, but in the interest of them not representing hockey fans in this city in an embarrassing manner, it might be advisable to make this clear to them in the same way that a large proportion of Montreal fans told those calling for Chara's imprisonment after the Pacioretti incident to "get their asses out of their heads", in the words of the great hockey sage.
The frequent references to barely remembered decades old victories, desperate optimism about how good the team will be once those flashy energetic kids mature, delighting in the badness of your own team (yay, another lottery pick! We win at losing!) and bileful longing for the day when geographical rivals inevitbaly suffer the same fate, it's all just so... Oily. And as we all know, that which is synonymous with the Oiler operation is equally synonymous with "pathetic". There are other, less pitiful ways to be a fan of a re-building team.
