Freddie Hamilton. Could easily make the team this year.

I hope Hamilton finds his legs this year and makes the team. He's always done well at the AHL level, but could never quite stay at the NHL level

Hamilton probably should of gone earlier all things considered. He's the oldest player on this list, but he's also probably the most NHL ready alongside Hathaway. Hamilton was the best centerman on the farm last year and I liked what I saw from him in his brief NHL stint.

Hamilton is approaching the end of the line of opportunity to make it as an NHL regular, hopefully he makes it this year.
Smith just entered the AHL ranks this year, so still has some time to develop and make it at the next level, not to mention living up to the 2nd round pick 'hype'.
As such, i voted Smith.

His offensive transition to the AHL did not go well. His ceiling is looking like 4th line checking goon now, which we need about 0 of in today's NHL.
Pretty telling that a 2nd rounder is still on the list in round 25.

Yeah, I don't see any NHL future for Smith, but I could be wrong. He's still pretty young.
Hamilton is a solid/good AHL player, but is likely a career 'tweener. At 24 and a forward, he's pretty much close to done developing. He's a nice depth player, but that's it.
Some guys that still have NHL potential are on the board, so I'll be going with them. Mattson, Schneider, Carroll all have a shot, Mattson having the highest upside.
I'm discounting Rafikov and Karnaukhov because it's possible they never play in North America as pros. Falkovsky is possibly on that path as well.

I dont see any scenario that Hamilton ever makes this team for more than a 3 game callup with nothing on the line

I don't see why so many are writing off Smith right now, while still thinking Klimchuk is worthy of his draft selection.
Smith is 6 months younger (and a whole lot bigger) than Klimchuk, and produced ~as much as Klimchuk did this year in the AHL, with less ice-time.
Neither of their seasons were especially confidence inspiring, but it's not fair to write off one and hope for the other. I would rank them very similarly as prospects at this time.

Yeah I went Smith again. He is still young and learning the pro game. The problem I have with Freddie is I don't see him as much as a prospect. I think he is at the end of the road and he is what he is, an AHLer/fringe NHL. Dime a dozen player that can be picked up on waivers.

I believe in the Jays.

Slim pickins at this point...
I mean we're probably picking from a bunch of guys that will likely never make the NHL as anything other then an injury call up.
I'm voting for Falkovsky. Yeah, yeah... 7th round pick yadda yadda yadda... but he's a giant of a human being (6'7, 224) and put up 32 points in 58 games in the OHL (leading all blueliners on his team) in his first year in North America. There has to be some upside there.

You have to consider that they were in totally different positions with the team.
Klimchuk played most of his time with Arnold, and they were used as the shutdown forward line. Given very little time to develop their offensive game which is downright stupid by Huska.
Klimchuk is a jack of all trades type player, while Smith is a one trick pony at the pro level. Can't just compare points and size then suggest Smith is better...

I'm not sure if you're just pointing to the fact that Karnaukhov isn't talented enough to turn pro in NA, but he does currently play in NA unlike Rafikov. Last 2 seasons with the Calgary Hitmen.

Karnaukhov is going to the KHL. He mentioned that Calgary has a lot of centers ahead of him on the depth chart. It's possible he never returns to N.A.

Both Smith and Kanzig were wastes of low round picks. Not saying they were bad picks, but they were bad picks for their respective rounds. Both of whom should've been selected in the 5th or later rounds

People say that Klimchuk was in a bad spot to produce offense, but the same would apply to Smith. With the purges this off-season they should both have the opportunity to play up the lineup a bit next season.

I agree 2nd and 3rd round picks shouldn't be used on players just for their size. Nobody would care if they were low round picks. Honestly people don't seem too upset about Smith being a seemingly wasted 2nd round pick. I guess there was some distaste at the time of the draft, but that's about it.
But hey, not all prospects work out and it doesn't matter where they were drafted. This poll is up to round 25 after all.
Best part about looking at the Flames prospect pool is not only does it seem deep, but very balanced. Promising goaltending, defense and forward prospects. Not only having the positions, but all types of players within those positions. Small and skilled, big and mean, small and mean, big and skilled.

that's not fair. Klimchuk had a pretty meh first AHL season offensive stat wise, yet i know i've still got hope that there is growth and development to be seen as he enters his second pro season.
Why can we not hold the same hope for smith? the fact that he's only being considered to win a poll at round 25th and beyond is telling on the lower probability that happens of course but....

Well there`s the fact that he was not even PPG in Junior as a 19 year old.... At no point in his career has there been hope for Smith. In Klimchuk`s case, there was hope for him in Junior.
