a 27 year old NHLer who is tough to play against, who played a regular shift with an elite team.

Sorry we didn't draft a falling euro instead.

Looks like Bollig got the Flyers treatment though. Just signed that three year contract, and just bought a new home in Chicago three weeks ago... http://www.chicagotribune.com/classi...,1021294.story (slow news day in Chicago, apparently)

good pick up but not worth a third. Granted flames didn't have a 4th or 5th to offer.

There are probably a lot of older Europeans and minor leaguers that would love a shot too.

Bollig is 27 and only has 125 games (82 coming last year). Are there really no 23 or 24 year old players in the minors that were in a similar situation to him a few years ago that could also be just as useful? As a rebuilding team with nothing but time, it seems lazy to not keep the pick and find this type of player another way. Not that a late 3rd is anything drastic, but it doesn't seem like the most efficient asset management. I would love to be proven wrong though.

Sucks for him but I expect with the news of the $69 million cap the Hawks plans changed in a hurry and had to start looking at ways to shed salary. Good fortune for the Flames but sucks for Bollig.

It's just not a great draft, nobody is going to give up a guy with 3 years of reasonable term left who can play for a 5th this year.

This is literally the dumbest thread all week.

There have been a dozen good, fact-filled posts pointing out why Bollig is a great 4th line guy to have, but rather than actually read the thread, literally every second post is "hurr a meathead? wtf?"

Jesus christ people, read and address points, don't just come in and rehash the same bull#### that didn't even make sense the first time it was posted.

And you would trade any current NHLer for any draft pick with that argument?

[apologies for admitted snarkiness - not happy with Flames performance today at all after ecstatic with landing Bennett last night - hope the Flames brass know more than I do - not keen on 2nd rnd selections where they got them and for me I hate parting with picks, even if a 3rd rnder...]

This is actually great. We'll have him during his peak years and it will take a load off Mcgrattan allowing him to play longer as well. Flames management has gotten about 90% of their moves right which is a lot better than previously.

Do you really want me to answer that?

This draft is pretty terrible after the first 30 or so players. The guys getting picked now will likely never play a full season in the NHL. Let's be realistic here as they got a full time NHLer over what amounts to a needle in a haystack hope and prayer pick.

Another thing to consider is that Big Ern is getting a little long in the tooth so to speak, so locking up a potential replacement for when he moves on to retirement is a good thing too.

For what McGratton is, a couple years left in the tank is not hard to understand.

The Salary cap actually forced Chicago to make this trade, they were over the cap prior to making this deal.

I don't know about anyone else but I'm a bit bummed because

1) We didn't draft a RH D - our biggest need
2) We don't draft again until the 6th round

Had we picked a RH D instead of a goalie in the second then maybe I'd be more behind this trade.

Very good 'advanced stats' for this type of player.
Excellent pickup.

Bollig, to me, is a lad you after if you're a competitor now - that's just me I guess. Realize you gotta ice a squad, but dealin' key picks when you are supposedly in rebuild mode. Not sure I get the logic, but I'm a draft/prospect lover...hopefully Bollig proves invaluable and maybe even convert him for something even more substantial later...

With all this young talent in our top 6, the team is going to need some veteran leadership coming from somewhere. Why not have a Stanley Cup winner watching the kids' backs.

Understandable move. Would have rather picked Vanier myself, but I understand and like the move. ...
