You can bet they care about it even more than McDavid or Draisaitl do. Woody is probably just carrying out marching orders from the greasy lamb chops that watch over him.

The funny part is I think that as long as that's the priority, they'll hold themselves back from ever reaching the ultimate prize, because of how much they lean on those two guys and ride them into the ground, even in inappropriate situations.

Just look how burnt out Draisaitl was at the end.
McDavid and Draisaitl have been overplayed going back to the McLellan years as the mentality of overplaying their superstars just keeps getting carried over from coach to coach. For years it seemed like they were up to the task but these playoffs were the first time you could see the fatigue setting in for both players. If by chance they beat the Knights in 7 games I'm not sure they had enough gas to go another two rounds. Draisaitl is going to be 28 next season and you wonder how long a big guy like him can last playing that much hockey every season.

It seems to me that Colorado (last year) and Vegas (this year) exposed how to limit mcdavid to a large degree. They just let him skate around the edges and made it tough for him to get to the middle. Draisaitl has shown to be more successful as a playoff player. However, his maturity makes him vulnerable to lose focus. That said, playing those two 26 plus minutes a night all season burns them out and that will happen quicker from this point forward

2 goalies......... $7,600,000
dead space...... $2,766,667

Total:............ $76,767,500
Space:............ $6,732,500

They need to sign one d-man (Bouchard) and 5 or 6 forwards. Kostin and McLeod are RFAs, so you assume they are signing them.

Even if you assume league minimum for the 5 forwards (I can't see Kostin signing for that), that leaves $2.9M for Bouchard. No way in hell he signs for that. If you assume something like $4M for Bouchard (still conservative), that leaves them able to sign 3 guys at league minimum, and still be 3 bodies short.

So no Janmark, no Ryan, no Bjugstad - all replaced with league minimum guys. And they STILL need to find about $3M, so they'll need to move Yamamoto (and replace with league minimum).

Next year (24/25) is exactly the same. Then Draisaitl becomes UFA. Yes, this was their window.

i tried bringing this up with a buddy that is an oiler fan (yea i know... friends with an oiler fan was my first mistake)

here is his reply...

i beg to differ. cap is going up, bouch will sign a bridge deal and just some depth 3rd and 4th signings for cheap. we already have holloway ready to slide in. our team will look very similar and pumped about it. another year older and wiser

Holloway is included in my numbers, by the way. Also, the cap is already set at $83.5M, which is what I used. They will have to replace their entire bottom 6 with league-minimum guys.

No chance that Bouchard signs anything under $4M, IMO, unless it is a one year deal for maybe 3-something. But if you're Bouchard, why would you do that? You could get injured, the team could trade you... When you have a good year, and it's time for a new contract, you go get what you can - the career is short.

The quality of player actually goes down a full league for every forward line they have.

I wouldn't be surprised if Kostin asks for a trade or decides to go overseas. He's getting paid minimum and gets f-all for icetime. He got 3 minutes in the last 2 playoff games. What's the point?

He's an RFA with arb rights. He's gonna get paid more or be cut loose.

Bouchard has 26 points in 28 games in the their last 2 playoff runs and is 0.5 PPG on the last two seasons. Getting him @ $6M/yr would be a sweatheart deal.

He was pretty bad over the first 60 games of the season and his offensive production spiked when he replaced Barrie on a historic powerplay. He's a powerplay specialist and based on his overall play he's about a $4 million defenseman but I'm really hoping for him to be overpaid.

I trust capfriendly but that shows he'd have a negative cap hit in 24-25. Is that right?

What's it cost for another team to take on Nurse' contract without any salary retention by the Oilers? Cause that's the only way I can see them being able to re-sign Bouchard and fill the rest of their roster with $1m players.

I can't see Bouchard taking a penny less than $7.5m

No team is going to give him $7.5 million. He's not a very good defenseman.

Neither is Nurse and he's getting 9.25.

Bouchebomb should be starting the negotiation there. It's up to the Oilers to negotiate down.

I mean **

everybody knows why he has so many points...some rando team isn't going to offer sheet him expecting the same there

do you think Nuge would be paid like a 100 point player if he was up?
