So...does nobody think that one of McDrai asks for a trade?

Even they can't be stupid enough to think they're "close". (Or are they? That stupid. Not close LOL.)

Only 7 more years left on the Nurse deal, they have him locked down at 9.25 million until 2030.

I wouldn't be shocked if Draisaitl did. You can tell he really hates the media and Edmonton probably has the worst media in the NHL. He'd probably be much happier somewhere where he could be "the guy" without all the questions.

Literally on the ice.

I think both realize their best chance to maximize their earnings, either with Edmonton or with someone else in FA, is continuing to play with each other. IMO better odds they try to play GM and ask for certain players to be shipped out or brought in

Not until Matthews leaves for Tempe.

Once that happens it's on like Donkey Kong.

McDavid will make max salary on his next contract wherever he goes. Draisaitle might as well. But he can't do that on the same team as McDavid because no team can afford two max cap hits.

I don't care if Puljujarvi rides the pine to the SC, the fact that he going to be wearing a SC ring where the wonder twins golfing makes me extremely happy.

Maybe they will buy out Nurse. That would make his cap hit a million or less for the next three seasons. After that it gets ugly, but they don't seem to care about what happens beyond the next three years anyway.

These guys will look to low tax areas for those deals too. Florida, Tampa, Nashville, Dallas all get a nice number of games in places with no local income tax.

Definitely preparing for the worst for me. I felt this year everything was playing in their favor. Thankfully it didn’t happen

Sigh. There's no STATE tax. You are still getting dinged on federal income/payroll taxes.

I've been told total tax burden is a more reasonable measure for high earners to consider. Tennessee (6.22%), Florida (6.33%), Missouri (7.11%), Michigan (7.4%), North Carolina (7.6%), Arizona (7.62%), Nevada (7.69%), Pennsylvania (7.95%), Virginia (8.23%), Washinton (8.24%), Massachusetts (8.48%), Ohio (8.65%), California (8.89%), Minnesota (9.41%), Maryland (9.44%), New Jersey (9.76%), and New York ($12.47%) are the NHL states of consequence. The top 1% are usually paying slightly below the state tax burden for where they live. The advantage isn't as big as some will claim it to be unless you think New York is the norm.

So the difference between Nashville and New York is 6% which on a $40MM contract is still $2.4MM, still worth worrying about, depending on the circumstances (but that might be not what you’re saying, not sure).

I don't know enough about taxes to have much of an opinion about anything but it sure seems like those are awfully low tax rates relative to anything that would be paid in Canada. With the lower UFA ages it would shock me to see many players give up massive amounts of money, resulting in an overpayment that is crippling in a cap environment.

Florida has pretty strong property taxes to make up for the lack of a state income tax. Unless these guys like to rent in perpetuity, they're going to get dinged either way.

It isn't a deciding factor for most people on where to play or live. Lifestyle, quality of workplace, ability to win, and especially total salary dollars play a much bigger role on where to sign (unless you are Gaudreau of course).

I think hockey players do rent a lot. But moreover I dont think players think about taxes in very sophisticated ways, when you hear them talk. They look at what the cheque is (and property taxes aren't on there).

A lot of players on short-term deals rent, but guys that sign massive long-term deals, like the ones we keep discussing, are buying a place.

I agree with your point about player's not vetting every dollar of what they spend on housing. They probably have a "guy/gal" for that and trust them.

Here's a nifty little calculator that shows you broadly (don't expect it to be right to the dollar) what players pay in tax when playing for each team. They have a few other interesting calculators, including one that shows that if you play a full year in the league, you get 26.5k a year in pension once you turn 62.

If you rent you’re still paying property taxes. They’re just rolled into your rent by the owner.
