Funny, I was thinking the same thing.

They ended up firing the coach anyway and lost a valuable player for peanuts because a stuborn coach and GM with something to prove devalued the player so much.
Let's hope BT learned from past management mistakes. I mean that GM's brother still works for the team so that history shouldn't be lost. I hope.

Quite an amazing phenomena.

The Coaches make mistakes...not even close to the number the players make.
I was pretty foul tempered in the GT and said this only less eloquently. I just get tired of the “anyone can do better” comments. It’s way harder than it looks. There’s plenty of legit comments about him, but I do find it funny that people complain he doesn’t make adjustments, and also that he changes the lines, or that he’s too easy, but that he benches guys.

I think Ward is not a good coach compared to a lot of other NHL coaches - his record isn’t and his results so far are not great. I also think his roster doesn’t give him a lot of options and he’s trying to find a combination that works.

I didn’t think it was a great hire, but I think changing coaches now is harder than many have suggested. COVID creates problems and Seattle is also out there as a good opportunity for a coach.

OMFG. That got him benched for the rest of the game? When we are already down one of our top Centers.... Ward is ####ing useless. I agree trade Bennett to put him out of his misery.

May be Sutter (Brandon) is a better coach even.

What I see is that he went to go cut off what might have been a wraparound attempt before the pass was made.

Maybe it was a bad read, but benching worthy? I just don't see it.

He was in glide for the last 30 feet. Not acceptable.

They got out-played and out-worked by Vancouver. Lots of heat on the team, lots of rumours surrounding the locker room, terrible starts to games, and a chance to start redeeming themselves against their heated rival and put some emotion into this game. Turn the page - at least for one game.

Instead, they just do more of the same.

Rittich was good. A few other players I thought were also good (like Valimaki). I am happy that Rittich did well - it may be between Calgary and Montreal for the best combo in the NHL at this point (if Rittich continues looking sharp like he did tonight). That's a positive for this team no matter what other noise is going on.

This is a dead team. Someone needs to check this team for a pulse. At least poke this team with a stick and see if it grunts.

I will be surprised if Ward is still the coach by this time next week. The way this team is playing? His lineups - especially at key moments of the game? Not a chance that Ward is retained until this time next week.
Prepare to be surprised. He’s going to get a full season. I’m not a huge fan of his but he’s going to get the opportunity to work the team out of this slump, no question.

He also coasted from the blue in
But it does seem like a very itchy trigger
Don’t know how that helps anyone.
Not a good play by Sam
But don’t like the move by the coach

He’s benched Valimaki and Mackey, to lesser degrees. Of course, rookie benching isn’t unusual.

Tre as a GM is kind of like one of those cursed monkey paws.

Thing is, their 4th line (Neal-Haas-Chiasson) looked better than most of the Flames forwards tonight. Not least of all light years better than the Flames 4th line calibre players. That is pitiful and quite frankly, embarrassing.

Treliving has to be feeling the heat at this point. He has gone through a lot of coaches and has made some pretty significant trades and signings. He has been given the time and resources to build the team he wants, and this is it.

I have a feeling that if Treliving fires Ward, they are going to use it as a chance to clean house completely.

There is a lot wrong with the team, but ultimately you need to look at the guy who constructed it.

Agreed.

It's a bad performance on a bad play, but if that's the standard you'd be icing 4 players by the end of the game. Why just Bennett getting the axe.

Unless there's some other stuff we don't see like lazy practices or a bad attitude, I don't get it
