This is a coach and by extension GM's philosophy showing up in the player's instinct and it is based on fear. Tampa Bay had a message written in their locker room when they beat us in 04 "safe is death". How did this team lose that series and not have that as a core philosophy moving forward? What an embarrassment.
I disagree with your read of the play. I think Gio believed Gaudreau was circling back to get the puck, but he peeled off and Gio had to react last second.

Watching it live I thought Gaudreau was going to get the puck too. He does that play often where he curls around and collects the puck with speed to circle the faceoff dot and attack the net as a lefty.

Here it is:

It's a split-second decision, and Gaudreau was skating towards the puck before curling off. Bad luck as both players misread the other's intentions.

If Tre hires Sutter, Gallant or Boudreau and just leaves them to coach, I'm fine with Tre staying. I've never been a huge Tre fan, but he's good with trades and signing Markstrom is huge. If he could just hire a good coach, stay out of their way, and focus his own efforts on player talent acquisition I would feel pretty okay.

It didn't feel like we had any actual scoring chances though for basically in comparison. Johnny created the Andersson goal for (with a great shot of course), but almost nothing else came close other than a Lindholm post on the PP.

This team feels neutered.
I never had the feeling the Flames were going to win. Not from the opening minute when they had a giveaway inside their own zone right off the bat.

Decent D. Decent game by Rittich (good for him). Backs was good on McAvi coverage. Hitting? None. Emotion? Less. Scoring? Not enough.

I don’t think it was bench worthy. Unless it’s been some sort of recurring thing on coverage and he was told “don’t repeat it”.

Ward seems to bench guys a fair bit - Dube was as well.

Is it bad luck? It looks more like bad coaching in that the players don’t understand who’s responsibility it is to go for a puck in that area after a win

Very very very few can play in the NHL.

Even fewer can coach in the NHL.

Many of the ones who missed out on the former are convinced they have the aptitude and leadership to not only critique coaches....but actually imagine they would do a better job.

Quite an amazing phenomena.

The Coaches make mistakes...not even close to the number the players make.

I think the puck also bounced and the first one looked like it was headed out quicker, then the second bounce stopped it. Plus I don’t think Gio is as confident.

Ward seems to be coaching this team like a guy who knows the sooner he forces them to get rid of him, the better the severance will be. Looks every bit as out of synch maybe more than the end of the Brent Sutter days.

No, the puck was bobbled so it was slowly moving halfway between either player's set pickup location.

Blaming that play on coaching seems like a big stretch.

If the faceoff was a clean win, it's a nothing play. Likewise if it barely pops out then it's an easy pickup by Gaudreau.

Instead it's a 50/50 play and both Gaudreau and Gio seemed to freeze for a split-second. It happens. Geoff Ward can't control the physics of the puck from the bench unfortunately.

I can't believe this team made Gaetan Haas actually look good. That is really hard to do.

Pathetic.

I think you're absolutely right about this... but also, one of the people who absolutely can coach in the NHL is Bruce Boudreau.

His teams are consistently successful and he always gets them to produce to their maximum offensively. And they play with creativity and almost always make the playoffs.

Hard to start doubting Treliving giving his proven track record at building winning hockey clubs, but I am starting to lose faith that he is the guy to turn this around. But after 7 years, these guys are Brad's Best and they are the horses we are running with.

Just looking at the post-game interview, Ward looks like he's aged 10 years in a quarter of a regular season. He's in way over his head.
