LA makes a ton of sense for Whitecloud. They were looking for a Gavrikov replacement in the summer, and I don't think that Ceci or Clarke fit that role. Moreover, LA might be heading into a rebuild in a year or two once Kopitar and Doughty are done, so any 2027, or 2028 picks might hold more value. I don't think that LA is a contender with Kadri replacing Kopitar.
Ottawa could be another destination. IMO they could really use Whitecloud + Coleman.

If the team if set on jettisoning aging veterans then Weegar and Kadri is the smarter choice.

At least the Flames wouldn't have to use their last retention slot on Whitecloud. His cap hit is quite manageable.
The last retention spot is probably best used on Kadri. Though this would actually be quite a bit of retention because of the term. Coleman could make more sense to retain since it's only 1 additional year.
The Markstrom and Andersson retention slots both end after this season.

Unless Whitecloud at 50% upgrades the pick from second to first for a contender wanting to make more than one move this deadline.

I would rather they save their last retention spot for a bigger trade with Coleman or Kadri.

Fair. But you've gotta wonder if Murray can stomach $3 million or so on Kadri for the rest of his contract. Coleman at 50 per cent a lot more palatable.

The dude is rich - its not going to impact him outside of social media which I'm sure he would get in Calgary if he screwed something important up.
And who even knows what his political leanings are.

He would be a nobody in Tampa. I don't see Nazem having an issue with moving there, assuming they're not on his list.

He’s made his political leanings pretty clear in the past. Just like other players.
And how do you know it wouldn’t impact him because he’s rich?

I'm fine with doing Tre a favour.
1st 2028 (Top 3 protected) + 2nd 2027 + Jarnkrok (cap dump) for Kadri (no retention)
Whitecloud to Chicago for 2 2nds 2026
Coleman to Dallas or Tampa for a 1st + 3rd (conditional - can turn into a 2nd).
Everyone is happy after this

Murray has ate a lot of money between Sutter, Hanifn, Rasmus, Markstrom. I think Murray is fine with eating the money, as best I can tell he is a hands off owner who lets the GM implement their plan.

He dislikes Trump and has said so multiple times in the media. If you use google you can find out. Not sure the rich thing makes a difference either.

Colorado would make a great landing spot for Whitecloud. They just traded Solovyov out, and I think they are looking to upgrade there. Not sure they are looking for someone as good as Whitecloud is (in terms of the value of assets they want to spend).
Hanley/Pachal would be great there too - they are both better than Solovyov defensively, and Pachal also adds that grit element. Out of the three, I think Pachal is the most likely to go to Colorado.

If Kadri was traded tomorrow at 50% retention, that's over $10 million on a player skating for another team. I think Murray would want a pretty juicy return if he's outlaying that much cash on retention.

Yes, any owner and GM in the league would think carefully and want more of a return with real dollars retained like that.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be 50% to make it work for the other team or worth it to the Flames though.
Also, the Flames went from spending to the salary cap every year to being well below, so that may help the budget for it.

What is the most, in dollars, that any team has retained? And what was the comp they received for it?
I can't think of a single case where a team retained $10M, and I can't imagine the Flames doing it. I have said a few times (sorry to be repetitive): I could see $1-2M retained maybe, but I can't see anything close to 50%.

Seth Jones was traded last year with 2.5Mx5 retained.

I can’t see it at all, not with term. We would rather take on a cap dump.

Seth Jones - $13.1M retained
Kevin Hayes - $10.7M retained
Tomas Hertl - $8.6M retained
Those are the top three.

How much would CGY have to retain on Huberdeau for him to be tradeable?
