Yes. But even though the Flames did pretty much what every other team does, and what most fans appear to have wanted, we are still required to bitch and moan because it was not done in precisely the way we wanted it, and precisely when we wanted it...

I actually have no issue with shorter term extensions, especially at this stage of the rebuild.
Have Conroy go prove he can steward this next phase of the rebuild and then maybe a longer, more lucrative contract extension to see this through.
Having multiple salaries on payroll for incoming/outgoing GMs would infuriate me as an owner, so just play it safe until you're totally set on the person for the long haul.

As long as the mandate is not unrealistic that will result in Conroy trying to fast track the rebuild to try and save his own job.
Barring a typical flames bounce back season where they are competitive next year I can’t see this team challenging for a playoff spot in the next 3 years.

To be fair it was pretty fun watching the “complain about anything” folk work their magic in such a short time frame though. Usually you have to wait months or years between them complaining about not getting what they want and then complaining about getting it. This was only days!

Yeah this is my take too.
I'd rather have more job certainty and a longer extension in the rebuild phase of this. That way there is no incentive to make short term decisions to save a job, and more incentive for ownership to remain patient.
I'd rather go to more of the 2 year extensions when you are in a contention window, time to make progress or we bring in a different leader.

Thinking about current team situation, I think 4-5 year deal would be a good term. Give him 2-3 years to build his team core and 2 year to compete for the playoffs.
If there's is no result after 5 year, it would be our retool season as our current young players get old and expensive.

I don’t think it is the norm to lame duck a GM like the flames have done with Conroy and what they did with Treliving. Montreal just gave 5 year extensions to Gorton and Hughes.
The average is 3 years typically and the Flames went lighter.
Fans are upset at the organization because it has been one of the most mediocre programs in the league for 20 years. The way the flames have conducted themselves over the years has fueled these narratives and why the fanbase is reacting this way.
Listening to the post game last night. Pat has said he has never remembered a time covering the team where there has been such a strong push from the fans for a different direction.
Ultimately I think we will all be pleased by seasons end by the moves as I want to remain optimistic we will see more than Andersson moved and we will get that top 5 pick. The messaging from the team has just been sloppy as pointed out by the insiders like Friedman and Seravalli

Conroy wasn’t really a lame duck GM this year if they already had the extension in the drawer. The only reason it even popped as an issue was because of that terrible Maloney interview

Yes hopefully that is the case. Why not announce it before the season when the slate is clean? I don’t think they had a deal done right away and entered the season with it being open. Maybe if the team was in a better spot he would have got the third year?

I hope this extension also makes Conny the POHO. Then promote Huska to GM next year and bring in a coach with a proven track record and PP success like Gulutzan.

There are two scenarios, one where Conroy and/or the Flames were uncertain or one where there was an agreement made that just had to be officially done. Seems like the latter to me as the uncertainty from either party would have increased into this poor start. You can read it negatively if you want but to me it implies the trust is there between Conroy and the Flames.

I am just going off history. I asked Burke the same question at a Luncheon he spoke at in 2017 when Treliving was a pending free agent GM why they hadn’t signed him but they did get that deal done as well which is pretty much what Burke had alluded to when answering the question. When Treliving left in 2023 his contract lapsed. It is not out of the norm for the flames to take this approach.

Posting before reading, so this may have already been covered.
Whilst i'm happy that the Conroy extension seems to be pretty much done, the rumoured 2 years worries me.
To me 2 years sounds like CC is being set up to do all of the dirty work, selling off vets, drafting at the top of the draft after poor seasons, then taking the fall for those poor seasons. Another GM comes in and reaps the reward for Conroy's work.
I might be feeling paranoid after the recent Maloney debacle, but I would have preffered a longer extension.

It's a pretty standard length for GM contracts these days it seems.
