When I drove taxi in the 70’s the general rule was no liquor in the front seat, if you wanted to drink you had to sit in the back seat.

That debate had some relevance to hockey though
Whatever was going on with Jay and you was totally off topic and I think most of us were trying to just not participate
There are political topics that carry over into sports
But that is not one of them.

I almost never tip Uber drivers. Especially more recently, where their 'tip' would be "you've no business being this sh-t at driving if you're going to make a living doing it professionally, go take a driving class". Just the absolute worst drivers in the city. Every time I take one, I feel like Donny at the beginning of "Gone in 60 Seconds" where he's working as a driving instructor.

"Don't look at me, look at the people next to you! Nex... Look at the... - well, turn the wheel! Pull over, pull her the hell over! Don't touch nothing! You can't negotiate turns. You can't signal properly. You can't maintain speed. You can't parallel park. Hell, you can't drive, honey. Sh-t, I can't swim, I know I can't. So you know what I do? I stay my black ass out the pool!"

I just stare at my phone and try not to catch a glimpse of their f-ckery.

Ya, my last Uber trip was horrifying. Yes, you need to be in the right lane. No, there are vehicles where you need to be so you are gonna have to change plans. Ok, now you've missed it. OK, sure, go around the block because you clearly have never driven downtown before and don't know where you are, so go ahead, take the third worst option. Follow the GPS. OK, you've entered the intersection and the light is turning, so please go. Please. Uh, OK or just stop here on the cross walk with your hood in the lane. Ya, those people honking at you are correct, you are in idiot. No, you have to wait for the straight through traffic before you can OH GOD OK YOU ARE JUST GOING. No, don't park in the bike lane to drop us off, please go to the corner. No? OK, sure here is fine I guess. 4 stars.

I was kidding about the rating, this was on my wife's account. Dunno what she rated him but definitely didn't tip.

What will it take for you to give a 1 star? They did nearly everything except rob and kill you.

Oh, I would have given one star. I'm not going to pester my wife into rating what I think, though I suspect she gave one star as well. The four star comment was a joke.

Depends on time of day and where you are arriving from. Departure drop off can be quite busy too.

But this is a good tip if the person does not have luggage.

arrived into YYC Saturday night and came out to wait for our Uber (ie our kids) to swing by. They are well trained and were waiting in the cell lot. Some dude pulls up and not only stops but gets out of his vehicle and goes into the terminal to find whomever it was he was picking up.

I feel sorry for people who just constantly think and talk about politics. I've lost a lot of friends to their miserable obsession with current events.

That kind of highlights the problem you're seeing; lots of people are treat politics as pop culture and it's f-cking fatiguing. What kills any sort of political talk for me, at least, is that while I will spend the time and the effort to be well versed on what positions I hold, it seems like people who insist on bringing up politics constantly have really strong opinions based on not much depth of understanding whatsoever. I hate having a conversation where I repeatedly have to interject with "Well, no, that's not quite how that works..." every two minutes. I'd rather just not have the conversation on the subject at all, but even more so when it's like that.

If they really understood the politics they wanted so desperately to talk about, they'd know largely how boring it is and that there are way better things about which we can spend our time talking.

We have a family group chat. It was useful for connect; but i had to leave. Every night you could tell when my dad was just trolling Facebook and throwing out random rightwing BS.

I've argued with him countless times over some of the trash, and he keeps doing it.

So i have left the group chat, but i even start showing up at their house less and less. it's said. i would rather not talk about this crap.

I told him he needs more hobbies other than twitter and Facebook. It shows how addicting these apps are and truly how addictive hatred can be. It's always something designed to make the viewer get mad.

I was reminded of an email that I got in 2020 when I was still at TELUS. A woman who had been working there for 20-odd years was sending out a farewell email for her retirement. In her email, she waxed poetic about how the company treated her so well and how proud she was of crossing the picket line during the strike because of how well the company treated her. She loved that Darren Entwhistle (our ceo) served her an ice cream cone. She used the word proud.

At the time she wrote the email, in 2020, union membership at TELUS had shrunk across the country from 20,000 to 8,000 in that 14-year period. Since that email was written 5 years ago, almost 6, the membership has plummeted to maybe 3,000 across the whole country. That's people answering phones, people working jobs across the cities and towns.

These are all union jobs that disappeared. The vast majority of them have been offshored out of the country, but the ones that remain through contract work are paid garbage with no benefits and no pension. I didn't think this person needed to love the union or even like the union, but more times than I would care to admit, I thought to myself, I wonder if she has any sense of regret for her actions during the strike or at least being proud of it afterwards. The very job and the benefits and her pension and all the things that made that place somewhere you could earn a modest middle-class lifestyle and have a dignified life, she participated in bargaining that away. She climbed the ladder and then kicked it over when she was done. And the gleefulness with which she bragged about being proud to have crossed the picket line still bothers me, and it's been years and I don't even work there anymore.

I hold grudges. My gears remain ground.

There was a time not all that long ago when a person couldn’t practically spend more than about 4 hours a week consuming political content. That’s how long it would take to read the pertinent sections of a daily newspaper and watch a few current events shows on TV. And even then you’d be looking at a super-keener. Most engaged people spent maybe 1 hour a week reading, watching, or talking about politics.

With infinite political content available on social media today, it has become a hobby/sport for many. And I don’t see any evidence that hyper-engagement has made them, or anyone else, any happier.

I don’t talk politics at all in general social situations, and find people who bring up politics all the time are invariably annoying about it.
