The discussion was about the summer of 2005 after the lockout. Turek still had two seasons left on his contract at the time but chose to retire instead.

MegaErtz suggested that the Flames paid him off under the table in order to do that, but they didn't need to because they had the option of giving him a compliance buyout which wouldn't have counted against the cap.

Calgary looks to be roughly against the cap, but I think this would have been close to the trade deadline so there were players that joined snd were traded through the year.
Look at those salaries it certainly doesn't appear so.

They should have to keep Kane on the team for an extra year! I can't think of a worse punishment than that.

Because they used Kane to abuse cap space once already, the league should penalize the Oilers the savings they got the past several years because of his settlement with the Sharks. Something like $2.5M per year, multiplied by the number of years they had cap circumvention in place, so 3 or 4 for a total cap penalty of $7.5 or $10M next season. Burn McDavid's last year as an Oiler to the ground.

Like this. Won’t happen of course but the punishment should be severe. Have to start cracking down on this and if there is evidence to prove it then it’s a good opportunity to make an example of a team.

If not cap punishment, take away a first round pick or two.

Plus the shenanigans with Smith and Keith and again, multiple times with Kane and the delayed surgery nonsense.

Its not "woe is Oilers! Why all bad things be done unto them!!"

They've gotten away with a lot already. They NHL gave an inch and the Oil took a mile. Thats when you get your hands slapped.

The Keith one was the worst. As I recall he retired a year early and was immediately given a job with the Oilers and I think he got to live in Kelowna. Not sure there was any info shared about him leaving the organization, but one could assume it was a short term gig. Just clear as day paying a player.

I could fully see the NHL giving them a warning about pushing things, and then they do it again.

Again, if they won would this even be news? They would take a penalty and celebrate for the next 30 years.

There needs to be a change in the rules. Maybe saying that any player who is not on the active roster during the regular season, is ineligible to play in the playoffs. Being on the farm team would count as active roster.
This, would effectively end the use of LTIR to skirt the cap issues.

Friedman has speculated it could be something like that in the playoffs you can have an expanded roster that exceeds the cap, but what you actually put on the ice has to be cap compliant.

And Edmonton fans whining about Tampa and Vegas cheating for years ... then have to go quiet when it appears Edmonton is doing it as well ... and then getting investigated!

How would the NHL expand an already unlimited roster in the playoffs? (not criticizing you, just Friedman's take). I've said it before, a cap-compliant playoff roster rule would penalize/hamstring teams that legitimately accrue cap throughout the season.

Ok Kane, Edmonton just traded you away and no longer sign your cheques. Speak up about them hiding you on LTIR now.
