Last year's deadline was a buyer's market. And goalies can be a bit different.

People missing the fact they retained 50% on Nelson. Can't see the Flames retaining for the remainder of Kadris contract.

Theres a pretty solid change he's not listening to offers on these guys.
Everyone yesterday said that the Islanders weren’t interested in moving Brock Nelson either (as illogical as that seemed). I don’t think there’s really such a thing as refusing to listen to offers - what it really means is that Conroy will only consider moving guys like Kadri for a sufficiently high price. If there is high demand for the player, the offers will come whether you say you’re listening to them or not.

It is certainly debatable whether the Avs may have paid a similar price for Kadri if Conroy were actively shopping him to them - my gut says only if there was significant salary retention on Calgary’s side, which is a tougher situation than with Nelson given the term left on Kadri’s contract.

Yeah that is a huge factor in the return.

Yeah but it's only playoff teams who will covet him now. So if a team destined to send you a 20 to 24 pick now sends that a medocre prospect and stacks on 3rds...it might have less overall return than say a team like Utah could offer in the summer if their 26 first ends up being the 17th overall pick in a stronger draft class.

So it's pretty dynamic in terms of what is the better return. Getting 7 "assets" is not always great if none of them really work out. Longer term outlooks on picks have more risk/reward...but the lost time is valuable in a business where it's likely you'll get fired one day.

Nelson did turn down a contract extension with the Isles so they obviously didnt want to risk losing him for nothing
