It is pure projection because they are trying to cope with how to think of themselves as strong good person, even though they have adopted a position of pure cowardliness.
Instead of defending their country, they are cowardly sucking up to the foreign leader that is attacking Canada in some pathetic attempt gain favour with the attacker. Deep down they see themselves as a loser who could never defend their friends family and country, and accepted default into their heart. So instead they are selling their friends and family our, in some vain attempt to save their own skin.
There are always weaker people who act like this. The Simpsons did a good job parodying it when Kent Brockman immediately sold out humanity with his "I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords" bit. But they are dangerous because they are the first ones to break, stabbing their family, friends, and countrymen in the back when they do.
And really, can you expect someone who is acting so pathetically to have the strength to be honest with themselves about what they are doing? Of course they take the route of denial, and accuse others of what they are subconsciously saying to themselves.
Out of thanks, but excellent post, thank you.

I haven't seen a lot of people asking how the F McDavid was so wide open in the slot. I was very surprised by that. Not sure what happened on the American coverage.
Not really sure what Matthews thought was happening there. He's the centre, McDavid is in the middle, who did he think was going to cover him when he turned towards Marner?
Was the original gameplan that Slavin was always going to cover McDavid in the slot, with the centre covering the winger? So when Fox and Hanifin get stuck out there instead, the coverage got messed up? This gives the most benefit of the doubt to Matthews, I just don't think it's really the case. Based on where everybody else was, McDavid was his guy regardless of a game plan. Did he think Hughes was supposed to drop back that far, leaving the outlet pass to Toews wide open? Or Nelson and leave Makar wide open? None of it makes any sense, only that players make mistakes, and Matthews' mistake just happened to be leaving Connor McDavid wide open in the slot in overtime.
Fox also over-committed across the crease when Makar sent it around the boards, which gave Marner a lot more space, which probably caused Matthews to think he had to shift over as well, so being the Flames fan I think we can throw some blame at Fox as well.
sorry if this was said elsewhere in this thread but one player that surprised me by how good he is, was Toews....i knew he was good but JHC this guy is unbelievable.
also, i know it's the wrong age and contract would be too much but i would welcome Bennett back - he is an absolute monster!

100% He was supposed to be honourary captain for Canada or something and he doesn't even look at the Canadian bench? Brutal.
Should've sent Iginla.
Oh man, Iginla would have been great. A big ol smile on his face, dressed in a Canada jersey, and just so stoked to be there. I'm guessing the NHL probably picked the honorary captains and not the teams?

1. it was after an icing, player were gassed
2. Fox and Hanifin are slow
3. Matthews went to get Marner, not expecting such a quick pass to the middle.

Point at the net was a factor too.

Looks like Fox going behind the net on the wrap around from the point started the chain reaction. Fox isn't there in time for Marner, so Mathews leaks out a bit to avoid giving him too much room and the other D-man is occupied by Point. McDavid doesn't move and the space just appears.

If there's a goal that everyone remembers
It was back in old '72
We all squeezed the stick, and we all pulled the trigger
And all I remember is sitting beside you
You said you didn't give a #### about hockey
And I never saw someone say that before
You held my hand, and we walked home the long way
You were loosening my grip on Bobby Orr
I wonder if there's any 8-year-olds in Canada who watched the game last night and will write the next great Canadian song
